The new corruption scandal that rocks India is in no way mean. According to an estimate, every Indian has lost at least Rs.1000!!! It was looted by industrialists, politicians, journalists and the so-called "lobbyists" - a misname for the modern age pimps!
Some of those industrialists already own India! They share among themselves 80 per cent of the country's wealth and resources. But their greed never ceases. They extend thier hands into every other sweety pot.
This time around, what's most appalling is the role of celebrity journalists involved in this scandal. They shamelessly parlayed their influential position into an obnoxious way of making some quick bucks. But, the silver lining in this darkness is the existence of some journalists who boldly rejected lavish offers from unscrupulous politicians and showed the courage to expose the dirty tricks behind the scene.
For the time being, this issue is creating a lot of noise. But, one thing is sure. This won't last long. Our memories are very short. We all will forget this very soon and will wait for another story to unfold - again involving some new characters! Long live Indian corruption saga!

ഈദ് നമ്മോട് ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്നത്
താജ് ആലുവ
ഈദുല് അദ്ഹ അഥവാ ബലിപെരുന്നാള് അതിന്റെ പേര് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതു പോലെ ബലിയുടെയും ത്യാഗത്തിന്റെയും സ്മരണകളുമായാണ് കടന്നുവരുന്നത്. നമുക്ക് പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടതെന്തോ അത് ദൈവത്തിന്റെ മാര്ഗത്തില് അര്പിക്കാനുള്ള സന്നദ്ധതയാണ് ദൈവം നമ്മില് നിന്നാവശ്യപ്പെടുന്നത്. മൂന്ന് സെമിറ്റിക് മതങ്ങളുടെ അനുയായികളാലും ആദരിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന അബ്രഹാം പ്രവാചകന്റെ ചരിത്രസ്മരണകളാണ് ഈദുല് അദ്ഹയിലെ പ്രധാന പാഠങ്ങള്. ത്യാഗമായിരുന്നു അബ്രഹാം പ്രവാചകന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ മുഖമുദ്ര. ആദ്യം പൂര്വികമതത്തിലെ തെറ്റായ വിശ്വാസാചാരങ്ങള്. പിന്നെ അതിന്റെ പേരില് സ്വന്തം വീടും കുടുംബവും നാടും. പുരോഹിതനായ പിതാവിനാല് വീട്ടില് നിന്ന് പുറത്താക്കപ്പെട്ട്, നാട്ടുകാരാല് വിഗ്രഹഭജ്ഞകനെന്ന് മുദ്രകുത്തപ്പെട്ട്, നംറൂദ് രാജാവിന്റെ അഗ്നികുണ്ഠം ഭേദിച്ച് പുറത്തുവന്ന അദ്ദേഹം ദൈവികമാര്ഗത്തില് സകലതും ബലികഴിക്കാന് തയാറായ മനസ്സുമായാണ് നാട്ടതിരുകള് ഭേദിച്ച് പുരാതന ബാബിലോണും ഈജിപ്തും ഫലസ്തീനുമൊക്കെ ചുറ്റിയത്. അവസാനം, ദൈവികവിളിക്കുത്തരം നല്കി മക്കാ മരുഭൂവില് ഭാര്യ ഹാജറിനെയും മകന് ഇസ്മാഈലിനെയും തനിച്ചാക്കി തിരിഞ്ഞുനടന്നു. വര്ഷങ്ങള്ക്ക് ശേഷം കുടുംബത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചുവരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നത് ദൈവികപരീക്ഷണത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും കടുത്ത ഘട്ടമായിരുന്നു. കാത്തുകാത്തിരുന്നു കിട്ടിയ ഏക ആണ്തരിയെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ സായം സന്ധ്യയില് ദൈവത്തിന് ബലിയര്പ്പിക്കുക! അതിനും മടിയേതുമില്ലാതെ തയ്യാറാകുന്ന പ്രവാചകപുംഗവന്! മാനവ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തില് തുല്യതയില്ലാത്ത ത്യാഗത്തിന്റെ ജ്വലിക്കുന്ന മാതൃക! പക്ഷെ ദൈവത്തിന് വേണ്ടിയിരുന്നത് ഇബ്റാഹീമി കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ രക്തമല്ലായിരുന്നു, മറിച്ച് അവരുടെ സമ്പൂര്ണ സമര്പ്പണമായിരുന്നു. അത് സംശയലേശമന്യേ തെളിയിച്ച അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ദൈവം തന്റെ അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്തും മാനവകുലത്തിന്റെ പിതാവുമായി തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു.
ഈ മാതൃകയുടെ ആഘോഷമാണ് ഈദുല് അദ്ഹ. അബ്റഹാം പ്രവാചകന്റെ ബലിയുടെ ഓര്മ പുതുക്കിക്കൊണ്ടാണ് പെരുന്നാളവസരത്തില് വിശ്വാസികളുടെ സമൂഹം മൃഗങ്ങളെ ബലിയറുക്കുന്നത്. ഒന്നാലോചിച്ചാല് ദൈവത്തിന് മനുഷ്യന്റെ ഒരുതരത്തിലുളള ബലിയും ആവശ്യമില്ല. മറിച്ച് ബലിമൃഗത്തിന്റെ മാംസം ഭക്ഷിക്കുന്നത് സമൂഹത്തിലെ ദരിദ്രരും അഗതികളുമായ ജനവിഭാഗമാണ്. പക്ഷെ ദൈവത്തിന് വേണ്ടത് നമ്മുടെ സമര്പ്പണ മനസ്സും അവനെ സൂക്ഷിച്ച് ജീവിക്കാനുളള നമ്മുടെ സന്നദ്ധതയുമാണ്. അത് നല്കാന് കഴിഞ്ഞാല് ഒരുവേള ബലിയറുത്തില്ലെങ്കിലും വിശ്വാസിയുടെ പെരുന്നാള് സാര്ഥകമായി. അതില്ലെങ്കില് എത്രയറുത്താലും അത് വെറുതെയായി.
ഈദ് എന്ന വാക്കിന് ആവര്ത്തിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് എന്നര്ഥം. ദേഹേഛകള്ക്കുമേല് ദൈവേഛയുടെ വിജയം ആവര്ത്തിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതിന്റെ ആഘോഷമാണ് ഈദ്. പൈശാചിക പ്രേരണകള്ക്കുമേല് മനുഷ്യപ്പറ്റുള്ള സല്കര്മങ്ങളുടെ വിജയം. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെയാണ് ബലിമാംസം അഗതികള്ക്ക് ഭക്ഷണമായി ദൈവം നിശ്ചയിച്ചത്. റമദാന് വ്രതത്തിന് ശേഷം വരുന്ന ഈദുല് ഫിത്വ്റില് വ്രതത്തിന് ശുദ്ധിയായും അഗതികള്ക്ക് ഭക്ഷണവുമായി ഫിത്വ്ര് സകാത്ത് എന്ന നിര്ബന്ധ ദാനം നിശ്ചയിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതും ഇതേ ഉദ്ദേശ്യം വച്ചുതന്നെ. അത്ഭുതകരം തന്നെ ഇത്! വിശന്നുപൊരിയുന്നവന്റെ നിലവിളി കേള്ക്കാതെ ദൈവവിളി കേള്ക്കുന്നവന്റെ പ്രാര്ഥനകള് അന്തസ്സാരശãൂന്യമാണെന്നാണ് ഇതൊക്കെയും തെളിയിക്കുന്നത്. സ്രഷ്ടാവുമായുളള ബന്ധം നന്നായിരിക്കണമെങ്കില് സൃഷ്ടികളുമായുള്ള ബന്ധം ആദ്യം മെച്ചപ്പെടണം.
ഈദിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സന്ദേശം ഇതേ മാനവികതയാണ്. 'മനുഷ്യ സമൂഹമേ, നിങ്ങളെ ഒരാത്മാവില് നിന്ന് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയും അതില് നിന്ന് തന്നെ അതിന്റെ ഇണയെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് അവര് രണ്ടുപേരില് നിന്നും ധാരാളം സ്ത്രീ-പുരുഷന്മാരെ (ഈ ഭൂമിയില്) പരത്തുകയും ചെയ്ത നിങ്ങളുടെ നാഥന് നിങ്ങള് വഴങ്ങുവിന്. ഏതൊരു അല്ലാഹുവിനെ മുന് നിറുത്തി നിങ്ങള് പരസ്പരം അവകാശങ്ങള് ചോദിക്കുന്നുവോ അതേ അല്ലാഹുവിനെയും കുടുംബബന്ധങ്ങളെയും നിങ്ങള് സൂക്ഷിക്കുക. തീര്ച്ചയായും അല്ലാഹു നിങ്ങളെ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നവനാകുന്നു.' (അന്നിസാഅ്, 1) വ്യത്യസ്ത മത-ജാതി-പാര്ട്ടി-ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളില് അംഗങ്ങളായ മാനവസമൂഹത്തെ നോക്കി അല്ലാഹുവിന്റെ കല്പനയാണ്, നിങ്ങളുടെ ഈ വൈജാത്യം വാസ്തവത്തില് നിങ്ങളെ ഭിന്നിപ്പിക്കാനല്ല, മറിച്ച് ഒന്നിപ്പിക്കാനാണ് ഉതകേണ്ടത്. നിങ്ങളുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കള് ഒന്നായിരിക്കെ നിങ്ങള്ക്ക് കരണീയമായത് ഏകോദര സഹോദരങ്ങളെപ്പോലെ വാഴുകയെന്നതാണ്. പരസ്പരം കൊണ്ടും കൊടുത്തുമുള്ള ജീവിതത്തില് വ്യക്തികളെന്ന നിലക്കും സമൂഹമെന്ന നിലക്കും നിങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ നിലനില്പിന് ഉതകുക ഈ നിലപാട് തന്നെയാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ഏത് സന്ദര്ഭത്തിലും വിശ്വാസികളുടെ സമൂഹം അമൂല്യമായ ഈ സമത്വവും സാഹോദര്യവും കാത്ത് സൂക്ഷിക്കണമെന്ന് അല്ലാഹു ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്നു. അതിന് വേണ്ടി ത്യാഗ-പരിശ്രമങ്ങള് അര്പ്പിക്കാനും സത്യവിശ്വാസികളോട് അവന് കല്പിക്കുന്നു. കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ സാമൂഹിക പശ്ചാത്തലത്തില് ഈ ആഹ്വാനത്തിന് പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യം ഉണ്ട്. പരിക്കേല്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട നമ്മുടെ മതസൌഹാര്ദത്തിനും സൌഭ്രാതൃത്തിനും ഖുര്ആന്റെ ഈ ആഹ്വാനം കൊണ്ട് ചികില്സ നല്കാന് വിശ്വാസികള് ബാധ്യസ്ഥരാണ്. മുസ്ലിംകളും ഇസ്ലാമും ഏറെ തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തില് സ്വന്തം ജീവിത സാക്ഷ്യം കൊണ്ടവര് സമകാലിക മാധ്യമജിഹാദുകള്ക്ക് മറുകുറി രചിക്കണം.
മനുഷ്യ ജീവിതത്തിന് നവോന്മേഷവും ആവേശവും നല്കുന്ന ചര്യകളും പ്രവൃത്തികളും പലതുണ്ട്. അതില് മിക്കതും ദേഹപ്രധാനമാണ്. എന്നല്ല, സ്വേഛയുടെ തേട്ടത്തിനനുസരിച്ച് ചിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയതാണ് അവയധികവും. ദേഹിക്ക് പ്രാധാന്യം കൊടുക്കുന്നവ വളരെ ചുരുക്കം. എന്നാല് ഇസ്ലാമിലെ ആരാധനകളും ആഘോഷങ്ങളും ഇതില് നിന്ന് ഭിന്നമാണ്. ആഘോഷം തുടങ്ങുന്നതുതന്നെ മഹോന്നതനായ അല്ലാഹുവിനെ പ്രകീര്ത്തിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ്. മനസിനും ശരീരത്തിനും ഉല്ലസിക്കാനും വിനോദിക്കാനുമുള്ള അവസരം നല്കുന്നതോടൊപ്പം അല്പ സമയം പോലും ദൈവസ്മരണയില് നിന്നകന്ന് നില്ക്കാന് വിശ്വാസിക്കവസരമില്ല. എല്ലാ ആരാധനകളുടെയും ആഘോഷങ്ങളുടെയും സത്തയായ ഈ ദൈവസ്മരണയാണ് വിശ്വാസിയുടെ മനസ്സിനെ സജീവമാക്കുന്നത്, അവന് മന:സ്സമാധാനവും ശാരീരിക സൌഖ്യവും പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. അല്ലാഹുവെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചിന്ത ഹൃദയത്തില് നിന്നൊഴിഞ്ഞവന് ആള്ത്താമസമില്ലാത്ത വീടു പോലെയാണ് എന്ന പ്രവാചകവചനത്തിന്റെ പൊരുളും അതുതന്നെയാണ്. ആള്ത്താമസമില്ലെങ്കില് പിന്നെ അവിടെ കൂട് കൂട്ടുന്നത് പിശാചായിരിക്കും. പൈശാചിക ചിന്തകള് പുറപ്പെടുവിക്കുന്ന മനസ്സിന്റെ ഉടമയില് നിന്ന് പിന്നെ നന്മ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നത് അസ്ഥാനത്താകും.
എല്ലാം വാണിജ്യവല്ക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ലോകത്ത് ഈദും അതില്നിന്നൊഴിവല്ല. നമ്മുടെ എല്ലാ അജണ്ടകളും ഇന്ന് തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നത് കമ്പോളമാണെന്ന് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. കമ്പോളമാകട്ടെ മാധ്യമങ്ങളാലാണ് നിയന്ത്രിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. മാധ്യമങ്ങള്ക്ക് എന്തും ബിസിനസുമാണ്. ഏത് തരം ആഘോഷങ്ങളും ഉല്സവങ്ങളും അവര് വിറ്റ് കാശാക്കും. വിഡ്ഢിപ്പെട്ടിയുടെ മുന്നില് ഈദാഘോഷിക്കാന് തീരുമാനിച്ചവര് ഇപ്പോള് ഏറി വരുന്നു. അത് വിളമ്പുന്ന തേഡ് റേറ്റ് ഹാസ്യത്തിന്റെയും ബ്ലോക്ക് ബസ്റ്റര് മൂവികളുടെയും അകമ്പടിയോടെയാണ് അവര് ഈ സുദിനം കഴിച്ചുകൂട്ടുന്നത്. കലയുടെയും സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെയും പേരില് സമയം കൊല്ലികളായ പലതരം ഉല്സവങ്ങളും ഷോകളും കൊണ്ട് നിബിഡമാണ്് ഇപ്പോള് ചാനലുകള്.
വളരെ ക്ഷണികമായ ഈ ജീവിതത്തെ ശാശ്വതമായ ഒരു ജീവിതത്തിലേക്കുളള ഏണിപ്പടിയായി കരുതുന്നവര്ക്കു മാത്രമേ ഈദ് എന്തെങ്കിലും പാഠങ്ങള് നല്കുന്നുള്ളൂ. ജീവിതം ആസ്വദിക്കാനും ആഹ്ലാദിക്കാനും മാത്രമുള്ളതാണെന്നു കരുതുന്നവര്ക്ക് ഇതൊക്കെ വെറും കളിതമാശകള് മാത്രം. അങ്ങിനെയുള്ളവരോട് പ്രപഞ്ച നാഥന്റെ ഈ പ്രസ്താവനയാണ് നമുക്ക് എത്തിക്കാനുള്ളത്: 'അവര് തങ്ങളുടെ കളിതമാശകളില് അങ്ങിനെ വിഹരിക്കട്ടെ. തങ്ങള് നിഷേധിച്ചിരുന്ന ആ പരലോകം വന്നെത്തുമ്പോള് അവര് പറയുകതന്നെ ചെയ്യും, ഞങ്ങള്ക്ക് തിരിച്ചുപോകാന് ഒരവസരം കൂടി കിട്ടിയിരുന്നെങ്കില്!'
പക്ഷെ, ഈ ജീവിതം ഒന്നല്ലെയുള്ളൂ?

ഈദ് എന്ന വാക്കിന് ആവര്ത്തിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് എന്നര്ഥം. ദേഹേഛകള്ക്കുമേല് ദൈവേഛയുടെ വിജയം ആവര്ത്തിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതിന്റെ ആഘോഷമാണ് ഈദ്. പൈശാചിക പ്രേരണകള്ക്കുമേല് മനുഷ്യപ്പറ്റുള്ള സല്കര്മങ്ങളുടെ വിജയം. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെയാണ് ബലിമാംസം അഗതികള്ക്ക് ഭക്ഷണമായി ദൈവം നിശ്ചയിച്ചത്. റമദാന് വ്രതത്തിന് ശേഷം വരുന്ന ഈദുല് ഫിത്വ്റില് വ്രതത്തിന് ശുദ്ധിയായും അഗതികള്ക്ക് ഭക്ഷണവുമായി ഫിത്വ്ര് സകാത്ത് എന്ന നിര്ബന്ധ ദാനം നിശ്ചയിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതും ഇതേ ഉദ്ദേശ്യം വച്ചുതന്നെ. അത്ഭുതകരം തന്നെ ഇത്! വിശന്നുപൊരിയുന്നവന്റെ നിലവിളി കേള്ക്കാതെ ദൈവവിളി കേള്ക്കുന്നവന്റെ പ്രാര്ഥനകള് അന്തസ്സാരശãൂന്യമാണെന്നാണ് ഇതൊക്കെയും തെളിയിക്കുന്നത്. സ്രഷ്ടാവുമായുളള ബന്ധം നന്നായിരിക്കണമെങ്കില് സൃഷ്ടികളുമായുള്ള ബന്ധം ആദ്യം മെച്ചപ്പെടണം.
ഈദിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സന്ദേശം ഇതേ മാനവികതയാണ്. 'മനുഷ്യ സമൂഹമേ, നിങ്ങളെ ഒരാത്മാവില് നിന്ന് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയും അതില് നിന്ന് തന്നെ അതിന്റെ ഇണയെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് അവര് രണ്ടുപേരില് നിന്നും ധാരാളം സ്ത്രീ-പുരുഷന്മാരെ (ഈ ഭൂമിയില്) പരത്തുകയും ചെയ്ത നിങ്ങളുടെ നാഥന് നിങ്ങള് വഴങ്ങുവിന്. ഏതൊരു അല്ലാഹുവിനെ മുന് നിറുത്തി നിങ്ങള് പരസ്പരം അവകാശങ്ങള് ചോദിക്കുന്നുവോ അതേ അല്ലാഹുവിനെയും കുടുംബബന്ധങ്ങളെയും നിങ്ങള് സൂക്ഷിക്കുക. തീര്ച്ചയായും അല്ലാഹു നിങ്ങളെ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നവനാകുന്നു.' (അന്നിസാഅ്, 1) വ്യത്യസ്ത മത-ജാതി-പാര്ട്ടി-ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളില് അംഗങ്ങളായ മാനവസമൂഹത്തെ നോക്കി അല്ലാഹുവിന്റെ കല്പനയാണ്, നിങ്ങളുടെ ഈ വൈജാത്യം വാസ്തവത്തില് നിങ്ങളെ ഭിന്നിപ്പിക്കാനല്ല, മറിച്ച് ഒന്നിപ്പിക്കാനാണ് ഉതകേണ്ടത്. നിങ്ങളുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കള് ഒന്നായിരിക്കെ നിങ്ങള്ക്ക് കരണീയമായത് ഏകോദര സഹോദരങ്ങളെപ്പോലെ വാഴുകയെന്നതാണ്. പരസ്പരം കൊണ്ടും കൊടുത്തുമുള്ള ജീവിതത്തില് വ്യക്തികളെന്ന നിലക്കും സമൂഹമെന്ന നിലക്കും നിങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ നിലനില്പിന് ഉതകുക ഈ നിലപാട് തന്നെയാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ഏത് സന്ദര്ഭത്തിലും വിശ്വാസികളുടെ സമൂഹം അമൂല്യമായ ഈ സമത്വവും സാഹോദര്യവും കാത്ത് സൂക്ഷിക്കണമെന്ന് അല്ലാഹു ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്നു. അതിന് വേണ്ടി ത്യാഗ-പരിശ്രമങ്ങള് അര്പ്പിക്കാനും സത്യവിശ്വാസികളോട് അവന് കല്പിക്കുന്നു. കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ സാമൂഹിക പശ്ചാത്തലത്തില് ഈ ആഹ്വാനത്തിന് പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യം ഉണ്ട്. പരിക്കേല്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട നമ്മുടെ മതസൌഹാര്ദത്തിനും സൌഭ്രാതൃത്തിനും ഖുര്ആന്റെ ഈ ആഹ്വാനം കൊണ്ട് ചികില്സ നല്കാന് വിശ്വാസികള് ബാധ്യസ്ഥരാണ്. മുസ്ലിംകളും ഇസ്ലാമും ഏറെ തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തില് സ്വന്തം ജീവിത സാക്ഷ്യം കൊണ്ടവര് സമകാലിക മാധ്യമജിഹാദുകള്ക്ക് മറുകുറി രചിക്കണം.
മനുഷ്യ ജീവിതത്തിന് നവോന്മേഷവും ആവേശവും നല്കുന്ന ചര്യകളും പ്രവൃത്തികളും പലതുണ്ട്. അതില് മിക്കതും ദേഹപ്രധാനമാണ്. എന്നല്ല, സ്വേഛയുടെ തേട്ടത്തിനനുസരിച്ച് ചിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയതാണ് അവയധികവും. ദേഹിക്ക് പ്രാധാന്യം കൊടുക്കുന്നവ വളരെ ചുരുക്കം. എന്നാല് ഇസ്ലാമിലെ ആരാധനകളും ആഘോഷങ്ങളും ഇതില് നിന്ന് ഭിന്നമാണ്. ആഘോഷം തുടങ്ങുന്നതുതന്നെ മഹോന്നതനായ അല്ലാഹുവിനെ പ്രകീര്ത്തിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ്. മനസിനും ശരീരത്തിനും ഉല്ലസിക്കാനും വിനോദിക്കാനുമുള്ള അവസരം നല്കുന്നതോടൊപ്പം അല്പ സമയം പോലും ദൈവസ്മരണയില് നിന്നകന്ന് നില്ക്കാന് വിശ്വാസിക്കവസരമില്ല. എല്ലാ ആരാധനകളുടെയും ആഘോഷങ്ങളുടെയും സത്തയായ ഈ ദൈവസ്മരണയാണ് വിശ്വാസിയുടെ മനസ്സിനെ സജീവമാക്കുന്നത്, അവന് മന:സ്സമാധാനവും ശാരീരിക സൌഖ്യവും പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. അല്ലാഹുവെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചിന്ത ഹൃദയത്തില് നിന്നൊഴിഞ്ഞവന് ആള്ത്താമസമില്ലാത്ത വീടു പോലെയാണ് എന്ന പ്രവാചകവചനത്തിന്റെ പൊരുളും അതുതന്നെയാണ്. ആള്ത്താമസമില്ലെങ്കില് പിന്നെ അവിടെ കൂട് കൂട്ടുന്നത് പിശാചായിരിക്കും. പൈശാചിക ചിന്തകള് പുറപ്പെടുവിക്കുന്ന മനസ്സിന്റെ ഉടമയില് നിന്ന് പിന്നെ നന്മ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നത് അസ്ഥാനത്താകും.
എല്ലാം വാണിജ്യവല്ക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ലോകത്ത് ഈദും അതില്നിന്നൊഴിവല്ല. നമ്മുടെ എല്ലാ അജണ്ടകളും ഇന്ന് തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നത് കമ്പോളമാണെന്ന് വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. കമ്പോളമാകട്ടെ മാധ്യമങ്ങളാലാണ് നിയന്ത്രിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. മാധ്യമങ്ങള്ക്ക് എന്തും ബിസിനസുമാണ്. ഏത് തരം ആഘോഷങ്ങളും ഉല്സവങ്ങളും അവര് വിറ്റ് കാശാക്കും. വിഡ്ഢിപ്പെട്ടിയുടെ മുന്നില് ഈദാഘോഷിക്കാന് തീരുമാനിച്ചവര് ഇപ്പോള് ഏറി വരുന്നു. അത് വിളമ്പുന്ന തേഡ് റേറ്റ് ഹാസ്യത്തിന്റെയും ബ്ലോക്ക് ബസ്റ്റര് മൂവികളുടെയും അകമ്പടിയോടെയാണ് അവര് ഈ സുദിനം കഴിച്ചുകൂട്ടുന്നത്. കലയുടെയും സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെയും പേരില് സമയം കൊല്ലികളായ പലതരം ഉല്സവങ്ങളും ഷോകളും കൊണ്ട് നിബിഡമാണ്് ഇപ്പോള് ചാനലുകള്.
വളരെ ക്ഷണികമായ ഈ ജീവിതത്തെ ശാശ്വതമായ ഒരു ജീവിതത്തിലേക്കുളള ഏണിപ്പടിയായി കരുതുന്നവര്ക്കു മാത്രമേ ഈദ് എന്തെങ്കിലും പാഠങ്ങള് നല്കുന്നുള്ളൂ. ജീവിതം ആസ്വദിക്കാനും ആഹ്ലാദിക്കാനും മാത്രമുള്ളതാണെന്നു കരുതുന്നവര്ക്ക് ഇതൊക്കെ വെറും കളിതമാശകള് മാത്രം. അങ്ങിനെയുള്ളവരോട് പ്രപഞ്ച നാഥന്റെ ഈ പ്രസ്താവനയാണ് നമുക്ക് എത്തിക്കാനുള്ളത്: 'അവര് തങ്ങളുടെ കളിതമാശകളില് അങ്ങിനെ വിഹരിക്കട്ടെ. തങ്ങള് നിഷേധിച്ചിരുന്ന ആ പരലോകം വന്നെത്തുമ്പോള് അവര് പറയുകതന്നെ ചെയ്യും, ഞങ്ങള്ക്ക് തിരിച്ചുപോകാന് ഒരവസരം കൂടി കിട്ടിയിരുന്നെങ്കില്!'

നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ആരോഗ്യകരമായ നിലനില്പ് തന്നെ അപകടത്തിലാക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് വഴിവിട്ട ലൈംഗികതയും സദാചാരഭ്രംശവും അരങ്ങ് തകര്ക്കുകയാണ്. നിത്യേനയെന്നോണം പീഡനവാര്ത്തകളും ലൈംഗികാതിക്രമ വര്ത്തമാനങ്ങളും കൊണ്ട് നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുകയാണ് വാര്ത്താമാധ്യമങ്ങള്. ജാതി-മത-പ്രായ ഭേദമന്യേ ആണുങ്ങളും പെണ്ണുങ്ങളുമൊക്കെ ഒരുമ്പെട്ടിറങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ആസുരകാലത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പേടി എന്താണെന്ന് ഒരു മാതാവിനോട് ചോദിച്ചാല് സ്കൂളില് പോയ പെണ്കുട്ടി അതേപോലെ തിരിച്ചുവരുമോയെന്നതാണെന്ന് അവര് പറയും. വിവരസാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യയുടെയും ടെലികമ്യൂണിക്കേഷന് മേഖലയുടെയും പുരോഗതി നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹത്തില് വിപ്ലവകരമായ മാറ്റങ്ങള്ക്ക് തിരികൊളുത്തിയപ്പോള് തന്നെ ലൈംഗികാതിക്രമങ്ങളുടെ വര്ധനവിനും അത് വഴിയൊരുക്കിയെന്നത് തിക്ത യാഥാര്ഥ്യമാണ്. സ്കൂളില് പഠിക്കുന്ന ചെറിയ കുട്ടികളുടെ അടുത്ത് വരെ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ മോഡല് മൊബൈലുണ്ട്. അശ്ലീല ചിത്രങ്ങളും വീഡിയോ ക്ലിപ്പുകളും കൈമാറുകയാണ് അതിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഉപയോഗം. ആരെയും എപ്പോഴും ഒപ്പിയെടുക്കാന് പറ്റുന്ന രൂപത്തില് വീഡിയോ കാമറകളുമുണ്ടവയില്. സഹപാഠികളെയും അധ്യാപികമാരെ വരെയും പകര്ത്തി ഇന്റര്നെറ്റിലിടുകയെന്നതാണ് പുതുതലമുറയുടെ പ്രധാന ഹോബി. പഴയ വേലിക്കെട്ടുകള് പൊളിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞ്, സദാചാര സങ്കല്പങ്ങളെ കൊഞ്ഞനം കുത്തി നവലോകം കുതികുതിക്കുകയാണ്. ഇവിടെയാണ് സ്വവര്ഗ പ്രേമികളായ തന്റെ ജനതയോട് ലൂത്ത് നബി(അ) ചോദിച്ച ചോദ്യം പ്രസക്തമാകുന്നത്. ധര്മച്യുതിയുടെ ഈ നടുക്കയത്തില്നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ നന്മയില് തല്പരരായവര് ഉറക്കെ ചോദിക്കേണ്ട ചോദ്യം: അലൈസ മിന്കും റജുലുന് റഷീദ് (നിങ്ങളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തില് തന്റേടമുള്ള ഒരു മനുഷ്യനുമില്ലേ?) എന്ന്. വിശ്വാസികളുടെ സമൂഹം ഈ ചോദ്യം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയും സ്വയം തന്റേടികളായി മാറുകയും ചെയ്യേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. സദാചാരഭ്രംശത്തിന്റെ കൂലംകുത്തിയൊഴുക്കിനെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കാന് വിശ്വാസിയെ സജ്ജമാക്കാനുപയുക്തമായ ഏതാനും പാഠങ്ങളാണ് ചുവടെ. നാമോരുരുത്തരും ഹൃദയത്തോട് സദാ ചേര്ത്ത് വെക്കേണ്ട പാഠങ്ങള്:

സത്യവിശ്വാസികളും വിശ്വാസിനികളും അന്യ സ്ത്രീ-പുരുഷന്മാരെ കാണുമ്പോള് ദൃഷ്ടി താഴ്ത്തണമെന്ന് പരിശുദ്ധ ഖുര്ആന്. നിങ്ങള് ആവര്ത്തിച്ച് നോക്കരുതെന്നും തുറിച്ചു നോക്കരുതെന്നും തിരുദൂതര്. അറിയുക, നോട്ടമാണ് എല്ലാറ്റിന്റെയും താക്കോല്. കണ്ണുകള്ക്കും വ്യഭിചാരമുണ്ടെന്നും അത് നോട്ടമാണെന്നും മറ്റൊരു പ്രവാചക വചനം. വഴിവക്കിലിരിക്കുമ്പോള് ദൃഷ്ടി താഴ്ത്തുകയെന്നത് വഴിയുടെ അവകാശമാണെന്ന തിരുവചനവും ഓര്ക്കുക.

നിങ്ങളുടെ രണ്ടവയവങ്ങള് സൂക്ഷിക്കുകയാണെങ്കില് സ്വര്ഗം ഞാന് ഗ്യാരണ്ടി തരാമെന്ന് പ്രവാചകന്(സ) പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. അത് നാവും ഗുഹ്യാവയവവുമാണെന്നറിയുക. നരകപ്രവേശത്തിന് ജനങ്ങളെ കൂടുതല് അര്ഹരാക്കുന്നത് ഈ രണ്ടവയവങ്ങളാണെന്ന് മറ്റൊരു പ്രവാചക വചനം.

നൈമിഷിക വികാരങ്ങള്ക്കടിപ്പെട്ട് വിവാഹേതര ബന്ധങ്ങളുടെ പിന്നാലെ പായുമ്പോള് ആലോചിക്കുക; വിജയം വരിച്ച സത്യവിശ്വാസികളുടെ ഗുണങ്ങള് വിവരിച്ച കൂട്ടത്തില് അല്ലാഹു എടുത്തുപറഞ്ഞ ഒരു പ്രധാന ഗുണം തങ്ങളുടെ ഗുഹ്യാവയവങ്ങള് സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്നവരാണ് അവരെന്നാണ്. വ്യഭിചാരം മ്ലേഛവും വൃത്തികെട്ട മാര്ഗവുമാണെന്ന് ഖുര്ആന്. പരമകാരുണികന്റെ അടിമകള് അതിനെ സമീപിക്കുകയില്ല.

ഇന്റര്നെറ്റും മൊബൈലുമൊക്കെ ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോള് അനുവദനീയതയുടെ പരിധി ലംഘിക്കാന് തോന്നാറുണ്ടോ? എങ്കില് നിങ്ങള് അനുവദനീയമായതിന്റെയും നിഷിദ്ധമാക്കപ്പെട്ടതിന്റെയും ഇടയിലുള്ളവയെ സൂക്ഷിക്കണമെന്ന പ്രവാചക വചനം ഓര്ക്കുക. പ്രത്യക്ഷത്തില് നിഷിദ്ധമല്ലെന്നാലും അത് നിഷിദ്ധതയിലേക്ക് നിങ്ങളെ എളുപ്പം കൊണ്ടെത്തിക്കും.

സ്വകാര്യതയുടെ സുന്ദരനിമിഷങ്ങളില് തെറ്റിലേക്ക് എത്തിനോക്കാറുണ്ടോ നിങ്ങള്? എങ്കില് കണ്ണിന്റെ കട്ടുനോട്ടവും ഹൃദയങ്ങളിലൊളിപ്പിച്ചതും അല്ലാഹു അറിയുമെന്ന ഖുര്ആന് വചനം ഓര്ക്കുക. എന്നല്ല, അദൃശ്യമായി അല്ലാഹുവിനെ ഭയപ്പെടുന്നവര്ക്കാണ് പാപമോചനവും സ്വര്ഗവുമെന്ന് ഖുര്ആന് ആവര്ത്തിക്കുന്നു. ജനങ്ങളുടെ മുന്നില് മാന്യനും രഹസ്യമായി തെറ്റുചെയ്യുന്നവനുമാണെങ്കില് അവന്റെ മറ്റെല്ലാ സല്പ്രവൃത്തികളും നാളെ പരലോകത്ത് അല്ലാഹു ധൂളിയായി പറത്തിക്കളയുമെന്നറിയുക. ഇരട്ട മുഖം അല്ലാഹു ഏറെ വെറുക്കുന്നു.

ദുര്ബല നിമിഷങ്ങളില് പ്രലോഭനങ്ങള്ക്കടിപ്പെടാന് സാധ്യതയുള്ളവരാണോ നിങ്ങള്? എന്നാലറിയുക, മറ്റൊരു തണലും ലഭ്യമല്ലാത്ത നാളില് അല്ലാഹുവിന്റെ സിംഹാസനത്തിന്റെ തണല് ലഭിക്കുന്നവരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തില് സുന്ദരിയും കുലീനയുമായ സ്ത്രീയുടെ പ്രലോഭനങ്ങളെ പുറംകാലുകൊണ്ട് തട്ടിയെറിയുന്നവനുണ്ട്. ഗുഹയിലകപ്പെട്ട മൂന്ന് പേരുടെ കഥ പറയുന്നിടത്ത് അല്ലാഹുവിനെ സൂക്ഷിച്ച് തെറ്റില് നിന്നകന്നതിന്റെ പേരില് ആപത്ത് നീങ്ങിപ്പോയത് വിവരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് പ്രവാചകന്(സ).

സ്വര്ഗത്തില് ആദ്യം പ്രവേശിക്കുന്ന മൂന്ന് പേരെ തനിക്ക് പ്രദര്ശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടതില് ലൈംഗിക സദാചാരം പാലിക്കുന്നവനുണ്ടെന്ന് നബി തിരുമേനി(സ) അരുള് ചെയ്യുന്നു. അല്ലാഹുവിന്റെ മാര്ഗത്തില് സമരം ചെയ്യുന്നവനും നന്നായി ഇബാദത്തെടുക്കുകയും യജമാനനോട് ഗുണകാംക്ഷ വെച്ചുപുലര്ത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന അടിമയുമാണ് മറ്റ് രണ്ടുപേര്.

നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ആരോഗ്യകരമായ നിലനില്പ് തന്നെ അപകടത്തിലാക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് വഴിവിട്ട ലൈംഗികതയും സദാചാരഭ്രംശവും അരങ്ങ് തകര്ക്കുകയാണ്. നിത്യേനയെന്നോണം പീഡനവാര്ത്തകളും ലൈംഗികാതിക്രമ വര്ത്തമാനങ്ങളും കൊണ്ട് നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുകയാണ് വാര്ത്താമാധ്യമങ്ങള്. ജാതി-മത-പ്രായ ഭേദമന്യേ ആണുങ്ങളും പെണ്ണുങ്ങളുമൊക്കെ ഒരുമ്പെട്ടിറങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ആസുരകാലത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പേടി എന്താണെന്ന് ഒരു മാതാവിനോട് ചോദിച്ചാല് സ്കൂളില് പോയ പെണ്കുട്ടി അതേപോലെ തിരിച്ചുവരുമോയെന്നതാണെന്ന് അവര് പറയും. വിവരസാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യയുടെയും ടെലികമ്യൂണിക്കേഷന് മേഖലയുടെയും പുരോഗതി നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹത്തില് വിപ്ലവകരമായ മാറ്റങ്ങള്ക്ക് തിരികൊളുത്തിയപ്പോള് തന്നെ ലൈംഗികാതിക്രമങ്ങളുടെ വര്ധനവിനും അത് വഴിയൊരുക്കിയെന്നത് തിക്ത യാഥാര്ഥ്യമാണ്. സ്കൂളില് പഠിക്കുന്ന ചെറിയ കുട്ടികളുടെ അടുത്ത് വരെ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ മോഡല് മൊബൈലുണ്ട്. അശ്ലീല ചിത്രങ്ങളും വീഡിയോ ക്ലിപ്പുകളും കൈമാറുകയാണ് അതിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഉപയോഗം. ആരെയും എപ്പോഴും ഒപ്പിയെടുക്കാന് പറ്റുന്ന രൂപത്തില് വീഡിയോ കാമറകളുമുണ്ടവയില്. സഹപാഠികളെയും അധ്യാപികമാരെ വരെയും പകര്ത്തി ഇന്റര്നെറ്റിലിടുകയെന്നതാണ് പുതുതലമുറയുടെ പ്രധാന ഹോബി. പഴയ വേലിക്കെട്ടുകള് പൊളിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞ്, സദാചാര സങ്കല്പങ്ങളെ കൊഞ്ഞനം കുത്തി നവലോകം കുതികുതിക്കുകയാണ്. ഇവിടെയാണ് സ്വവര്ഗ പ്രേമികളായ തന്റെ ജനതയോട് ലൂത്ത് നബി(അ) ചോദിച്ച ചോദ്യം പ്രസക്തമാകുന്നത്. ധര്മച്യുതിയുടെ ഈ നടുക്കയത്തില്നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ നന്മയില് തല്പരരായവര് ഉറക്കെ ചോദിക്കേണ്ട ചോദ്യം: അലൈസ മിന്കും റജുലുന് റഷീദ് (നിങ്ങളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തില് തന്റേടമുള്ള ഒരു മനുഷ്യനുമില്ലേ?) എന്ന്. വിശ്വാസികളുടെ സമൂഹം ഈ ചോദ്യം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയും സ്വയം തന്റേടികളായി മാറുകയും ചെയ്യേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. സദാചാരഭ്രംശത്തിന്റെ കൂലംകുത്തിയൊഴുക്കിനെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കാന് വിശ്വാസിയെ സജ്ജമാക്കാനുപയുക്തമായ ഏതാനും പാഠങ്ങളാണ് ചുവടെ. നാമോരുരുത്തരും ഹൃദയത്തോട് സദാ ചേര്ത്ത് വെക്കേണ്ട പാഠങ്ങള്:

അമേരിക്കന് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ബറാക് ഒബാമ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പെട്രോളിയത്തോട് പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ച ഉശിര് ഇന്ത്യന്ഭരണാധികാരികള് ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചുവോ ആവോ? മെക്സിക്കോ കടലിടുക്കില് ബി.പിയുടെ റിഗ് പൊട്ടിത്തെറിച്ച് ദിനേന 30,000 മുതല് 80,000 വരെ ബാരല് എണ്ണ ചോര്ന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന സംഭവത്തിന്റെ മുഴുവന് ഉത്തരവാദിത്തവും ആ കമ്പനി ഏറ്റെടുക്കണമെന്നും പരിസ്ഥിതിക്കും പൊതുജനങ്ങള്ക്കും ഇതുവരെ ഉണ്ടായതും ഇനിയങ്ങോട്ട് ഉണ്ടായേക്കാവുന്നതുമായ എല്ലാത്തരം കഷ്ടനഷ്ടങ്ങള്ക്കും പ്രായശ്ചിത്തം അവര്തന്നെ ചെയ്യണമെന്നുമാണ് കമ്പനി ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുമായുള്ള ചര്ച്ചയില് അദ്ദേഹം ശക്തിയായി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. കമ്പനി ഉടന് പ്രതികരിച്ചു. 20 ബില്യന് ഡോളര് ഈയവശ്യാര്ഥം രൂപവത്കരിച്ച ഫണ്ടിലേക്ക് അടക്കാന് സമ്മതിച്ചു. ഷെയറുടമകളുടെ ഈ വര്ഷത്തെ ഡിവിഡന്റ് റദ്ദാക്കിയാണ് ഈ തീരുമാനം കമ്പനി എടുത്തത്.
ബ്രിട്ടനിലെ പെന്ഷന് പറ്റുന്ന മുന് സര്ക്കാര് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരടങ്ങുന്ന നല്ലൊരു വിഭാഗം ഓഹരി ഉടമകളുടെ അതൃപ്തി ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങിയാണ് ഈ തീരുമാനത്തിലേക്ക് കമ്പനി അധികൃതര് എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നത്. അതിനാല്ത്തന്നെ ഒബാമയുടെ വാശി ഒരു ഘട്ടത്തില് അമേരിക്കയും ബ്രിട്ടനും തമ്മിലുള്ള വടംവലിയോളം എത്തിയിരുന്നു. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പെട്രോളിയം ബ്രിട്ടന്റെ മാത്രം കമ്പനിയല്ലെന്നും ഓഹരി ഉടമകളില് ധാരാളം അമേരിക്കക്കാരുണ്ടെന്നും പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ഗോര്ഡന് ബ്രൗണിന് ഒബാമയെ ഓര്മിപ്പിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു. പിന്നീട് ഒബാമയും വാക്കുകള് മയപ്പെടുത്തിയതോടെ കൂടുതല് വഷളാകാതെ ആ തര്ക്കം അവിടെ അവസാനിച്ചെങ്കിലും ബി.പി.ക്കെതിരിലുള്ള കര്ശന നിലപാടുകള് ഒബാമയും അമേരിക്കന് സെനറ്റും തുടരുകയാണ്.
കമ്പനിയുടെ സി.ഇ.ഒ ടോണി ഹേവാഡിനെ സെനറ്റംഗങ്ങള് നിര്ത്തിപ്പൊരിച്ചു. വിവാദങ്ങള് കൊടുമ്പിരിക്കൊള്ളവേ ഹേവാഡ് രാജിവച്ചു. എന്നാല് ചുരുങ്ങിയത് രണ്ടുവര്ഷമെങ്കിലും നീണ്ടുനിന്നേക്കാവുന്ന പാരിസ്ഥിതിക പ്രശ്നങ്ങളുടെ എല്ലാ ഉത്തരവാദിത്തവും കമ്പനി ഏറ്റെടുക്കാമെന്ന് സമ്മതിച്ചതോടെയാണ് സെനറ്റംഗങ്ങളുടെ രോഷം അല്പമെങ്കിലും തണുത്തത്. ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും ആഴമേറിയ എണ്ണക്കിണറെന്ന (Deep Water Horizon) റെക്കോഡ് നേട്ടത്തിനിറങ്ങിയ ബി.പിയുടെ കണക്കുകൂട്ടലുകള് മുഴുവന് പിഴക്കുന്നതാണ് ഇപ്പോള് കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്.
ഇനി നമ്മുടെ സ്വന്തം ഭോപാലിലേക്ക് വരിക. 20,000 മനുഷ്യര് പുഴുക്കളെപ്പോലെ പിടഞ്ഞുമരിച്ച ഈ ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ രക്തസാക്ഷികളായി ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിനു പേര് ഇപ്പോഴും നരകിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. (മെക്സിക്കോ കടലിടുക്കിലെ റിഗ് പൊട്ടിത്തെറിയില് 11 പേരാണ് മരിച്ചത്.) പ്രദേശമൊന്നാകെ കടുത്ത പാരിസ്ഥിതിക പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും കുടിവെള്ളത്തില് വരെ വിഷം കലരുന്ന അവസ്ഥയും തുടര്ന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. അമ്മമാര് വികലാംഗരായ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങള്ക്ക് ജന്മം നല്കുന്നു. വിവിധ തരം കാന്സറുകള് ബാധിച്ച അംഗങ്ങളുള്ളവരാണ് ഭോപാലിലെ ഓരോ കുടുംബവും. വികസനത്തിന്റെ പേരില് ബഹുരാഷ്ട്ര കുത്തകകളെ ചുവന്ന പരവതാനി വിരിച്ച് സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നതില് അത്യന്തം ഉല്സാഹം കാണിക്കുന്ന നമ്മുടെ ഭരണാധികാരികള് നമ്മുടെ നാടിന്റെ വിഭവങ്ങള് മാത്രമല്ല, നാട്ടുകാരെയും വിദേശികള്ക്ക് പണയം വെച്ചതിന്റെ ഒന്നാന്തരം തെളിവായിരുന്നു ഭോപാല്ദുരന്തം. പരലോകം പുല്കിയ ഇത്രയധികം മനുഷ്യമക്കള്ക്കും ചത്തതിനൊക്കുമേ ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കിലും എന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള ബാക്കി പൗരന്മാര്ക്കും നീതിക്ക് വേണ്ടി വാദിക്കാന് സാമ്രാജ്യത്വ ദാസ്യത്താല് ആന്ധ്യം ബാധിച്ച ഭരണാധികാരികള് തയാറായില്ല. അധിനിവേശം സൈനികമായി മാത്രമേ നടക്കാതുള്ളൂ, പക്ഷേ, നമ്മുടെ അധികാരികളുടെ മനസ്സ് ഇപ്പോഴും സായ്പിന്റെ കാല്ചുവട്ടില് തന്നെയെന്നതിന് തെളിവുകള് ഏറെ വേണ്ടതില്ല. എന്നിട്ടിപ്പോള് കോടതി വിധി വിവാദമായപ്പോള് മന്ത്രിമാര് പത്ത് ലക്ഷത്തിന്റെ പുതിയ നഷ്ടപരിഹാരവുമായി വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. അതെന്തിനെന്നത് പകല് പോലെ വ്യക്തം. സ്വന്തം പൗരന്മാരെ കൊലക്ക് കൊടുത്തവരുടെ (ഈ വിഷയത്തില് നമ്മുടെ മുന് പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി വരെ പ്രതിക്കൂട്ടിലാണ്) അന്തഃപുര നാടകങ്ങള് ഓരോ ദിവസവും ജനങ്ങള്ക്ക് വ്യക്തമായിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. അത് മൗനത്തിന്റെ വല്മീകത്തിലൊളിപ്പിക്കാന് സാധ്യമല്ലാത്തവണ്ണം കാര്യങ്ങള് പുറത്ത്വിടുന്നത് മാധ്യമങ്ങള് മാത്രമല്ല, അന്നതിന്റെയൊക്കെ ഗുണഫലമനുഭവിച്ച, പല കളികള്ക്കും ചുക്കാന് പിടിച്ച അമേരിക്കന് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥര് തന്നെയാണ്. തൊലി വെളുത്ത ആഢ്യന്മാരുടെ മുന്നില് അന്തസ്സും അഭിമാനവും കളഞ്ഞുകുളിച്ച് അവരെ നിയമത്തിന്റെ പിടിയില് നിന്ന് രക്ഷിക്കാന് രാവിന്റെ മറവില് പണിയെടുത്തവര് ഇപ്പോള് അതേ ആളുകളെ കുറ്റവാളികളായി തിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുവരുമെന്ന് പറയുന്നത് നമ്മള് വിശ്വസിക്കണം പോലും! ലാഭം കൊയ്ത ബഹുരാഷ്ട്ര കമ്പനി തങ്ങളുടെ ആസ്തിവകകളൊക്കെ വിറ്റ് വേറൊരു കമ്പനിക്ക് ബാധ്യതകളൊക്കെ കൈമാറിയപ്പോള്പോലും അനങ്ങാതിരുന്ന നമ്മുടെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ നേതൃതം, ഇപ്പോള് രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ഖജനാവില് നിന്ന് (അഥവാ നികുതിദായകരുടെ പണത്തില് നിന്ന്) നഷ്ടപരിഹാരം കൊടുക്കാന് അല്പം പോലും ലജ്ജയില്ലാതെ മുന്നോട്ടുവന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇവരുടെയൊക്കെ ആത്മാര്ഥതയെ ഇനിയും സംശയിക്കാന് നമ്മെ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സംഗതികളാണ് ഓരോ ദിവസവും അരങ്ങേറുന്നത്. അമേരിക്കയുമായുള്ള ആണവകരാറിലും ഇത്തരം കമ്പനികളെ രക്ഷിക്കുന്ന വ്യവസ്ഥകള് തന്നെയാണ് ഉള്ക്കൊള്ളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.
അമേരിക്കക്ക് ബി.പിയില് നിന്ന് ലഭിച്ചത് ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ കാവ്യനീതിയായി വേണം മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്. മുതലാളിത്ത വ്യവസ്ഥിതിയുടെ കൂടപ്പിറപ്പായ ലാഭക്കൊതിമൂലം അമേരിക്കന് കോര്പറേഷനുകള് മൂന്നാം ലോകരാജ്യങ്ങളില് വിതച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന പാരിസ്ഥിതിക, മാനുഷിക ദുരന്തങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു വന്പതിപ്പാണ് അലബാമയുടെയും ലൂസിയാനയുടെയുമൊക്കെ തീരങ്ങളിലിപ്പോള് കറുത്തിരുണ്ട എണ്ണപ്പാടയുടെ രൂപത്തില് വന്നടിയുന്നത്. കുവൈത്ത് അധിനിവേശകാലത്ത് സദ്ദാംഹുസൈന് തീക്കൊടുത്ത എണ്ണക്കിണറുകളില് നിന്ന് ഒഴുകിപ്പരന്ന എണ്ണപ്പാടയില് ഒരു ഫെ്ളമിംഗോ പക്ഷി കൈകാലിട്ടടിക്കുന്നത് അന്ന് ലോകത്തെ ഞെട്ടിച്ച ഇമേജായിരുന്നെങ്കില് ഇന്ന് നൂറുകണക്കിന് പെലികണുകള് ക്രൂഡോയിലില് മുങ്ങിക്കുളിക്കുന്നതും അതിനെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്താന് പ്രകൃതിസംരക്ഷകര് പാടുപെടുന്നതും എത്രപേര് ടെലിവിഷനില് കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്? മെക്സിക്കന് കടലിടുക്കിന്റെ തീരങ്ങളില് നീന്തരുതെന്ന മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് ബോഡുകള് പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടതിന്റെ ഫോട്ടോ എത്ര പത്രങ്ങളില് വന്നു? ഇങ്ങനെ ഒളിച്ചുവെക്കാന് കഴിയുന്നതാണോ ഈ വന് ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങള്?
ഇതോടൊപ്പം ചോദിക്കേണ്ട ചില ചോദ്യങ്ങള് കൂടിയുണ്ട്. സ്വന്തം നാട്ടുകാരുടെ ക്ഷേമത്തിലും നാടിന്റെ പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണത്തിലും താല്പര്യം പൂണ്ട് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പെട്രോളിയത്തോട് ബില്യണുകള് ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തി വാങ്ങുന്ന ഒബാമ, ഈ ആവേശത്തിന്റെ പത്തിലൊരംശം എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് ഇന്ത്യന് മണ്ണില് അമേരിക്കയുടെ സ്വന്തം യൂനിയന് കാര്ബൈഡ് വിതച്ച വിനാശത്തിന്റെ വിഷയത്തില് കാണിക്കുന്നില്ല? ചുരുങ്ങിയത് ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വൃത്തികെട്ട ഈ വ്യവസായ ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ കാരണക്കാരനായ ആ വ്യക്തിയെ ഒന്ന് ഇങ്ങോട്ട് നാട് കടത്തുകയെങ്കിലും ചെയ്യുമോ? വെറുക്കപ്പെട്ട ആ വ്യക്തിക്ക് ഇനിയും ചുവപ്പ് പരവതാനി വിരിക്കാന് കഴിയില്ലെന്നറിയാവുന്ന നമ്മുടെ മന്മോഹനും കൂട്ടരും അങ്ങനെയെങ്കിലും പതിനായിരക്കണക്കിന് ഇന്ത്യക്കാരുടെ ആത്മാക്കള്ക്ക് മോക്ഷം വാങ്ങിക്കൊടുക്കട്ടെ. 11 അമേരിക്കക്കാരുടെ ജീവന് തുല്യമല്ലെങ്കിലും ഇത്രയധികം ഇന്ത്യക്കാരുടെ ജീവനും അല്പമെങ്കിലും വിലയുണ്ടെന്ന് സമ്മതിക്കാനുളള സുവര്ണാവസരമാണിത് ഒബാമക്ക്.

അമേരിക്കന് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ബറാക് ഒബാമ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പെട്രോളിയത്തോട് പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ച ഉശിര് ഇന്ത്യന്ഭരണാധികാരികള് ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചുവോ ആവോ? മെക്സിക്കോ കടലിടുക്കില് ബി.പിയുടെ റിഗ് പൊട്ടിത്തെറിച്ച് ദിനേന 30,000 മുതല് 80,000 വരെ ബാരല് എണ്ണ ചോര്ന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന സംഭവത്തിന്റെ മുഴുവന് ഉത്തരവാദിത്തവും ആ കമ്പനി ഏറ്റെടുക്കണമെന്നും പരിസ്ഥിതിക്കും പൊതുജനങ്ങള്ക്കും ഇതുവരെ ഉണ്ടായതും ഇനിയങ്ങോട്ട് ഉണ്ടായേക്കാവുന്നതുമായ എല്ലാത്തരം കഷ്ടനഷ്ടങ്ങള്ക്കും പ്രായശ്ചിത്തം അവര്തന്നെ ചെയ്യണമെന്നുമാണ് കമ്പനി ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുമായുള്ള ചര്ച്ചയില് അദ്ദേഹം ശക്തിയായി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. കമ്പനി ഉടന് പ്രതികരിച്ചു. 20 ബില്യന് ഡോളര് ഈയവശ്യാര്ഥം രൂപവത്കരിച്ച ഫണ്ടിലേക്ക് അടക്കാന് സമ്മതിച്ചു. ഷെയറുടമകളുടെ ഈ വര്ഷത്തെ ഡിവിഡന്റ് റദ്ദാക്കിയാണ് ഈ തീരുമാനം കമ്പനി എടുത്തത്.
ബ്രിട്ടനിലെ പെന്ഷന് പറ്റുന്ന മുന് സര്ക്കാര് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരടങ്ങുന്ന നല്ലൊരു വിഭാഗം ഓഹരി ഉടമകളുടെ അതൃപ്തി ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങിയാണ് ഈ തീരുമാനത്തിലേക്ക് കമ്പനി അധികൃതര് എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നത്. അതിനാല്ത്തന്നെ ഒബാമയുടെ വാശി ഒരു ഘട്ടത്തില് അമേരിക്കയും ബ്രിട്ടനും തമ്മിലുള്ള വടംവലിയോളം എത്തിയിരുന്നു. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പെട്രോളിയം ബ്രിട്ടന്റെ മാത്രം കമ്പനിയല്ലെന്നും ഓഹരി ഉടമകളില് ധാരാളം അമേരിക്കക്കാരുണ്ടെന്നും പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ഗോര്ഡന് ബ്രൗണിന് ഒബാമയെ ഓര്മിപ്പിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു. പിന്നീട് ഒബാമയും വാക്കുകള് മയപ്പെടുത്തിയതോടെ കൂടുതല് വഷളാകാതെ ആ തര്ക്കം അവിടെ അവസാനിച്ചെങ്കിലും ബി.പി.ക്കെതിരിലുള്ള കര്ശന നിലപാടുകള് ഒബാമയും അമേരിക്കന് സെനറ്റും തുടരുകയാണ്.

അമേരിക്കക്ക് ബി.പിയില് നിന്ന് ലഭിച്ചത് ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ കാവ്യനീതിയായി വേണം മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്. മുതലാളിത്ത വ്യവസ്ഥിതിയുടെ കൂടപ്പിറപ്പായ ലാഭക്കൊതിമൂലം അമേരിക്കന് കോര്പറേഷനുകള് മൂന്നാം ലോകരാജ്യങ്ങളില് വിതച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന പാരിസ്ഥിതിക, മാനുഷിക ദുരന്തങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു വന്പതിപ്പാണ് അലബാമയുടെയും ലൂസിയാനയുടെയുമൊക്കെ തീരങ്ങളിലിപ്പോള് കറുത്തിരുണ്ട എണ്ണപ്പാടയുടെ രൂപത്തില് വന്നടിയുന്നത്. കുവൈത്ത് അധിനിവേശകാലത്ത് സദ്ദാംഹുസൈന് തീക്കൊടുത്ത എണ്ണക്കിണറുകളില് നിന്ന് ഒഴുകിപ്പരന്ന എണ്ണപ്പാടയില് ഒരു ഫെ്ളമിംഗോ പക്ഷി കൈകാലിട്ടടിക്കുന്നത് അന്ന് ലോകത്തെ ഞെട്ടിച്ച ഇമേജായിരുന്നെങ്കില് ഇന്ന് നൂറുകണക്കിന് പെലികണുകള് ക്രൂഡോയിലില് മുങ്ങിക്കുളിക്കുന്നതും അതിനെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്താന് പ്രകൃതിസംരക്ഷകര് പാടുപെടുന്നതും എത്രപേര് ടെലിവിഷനില് കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്? മെക്സിക്കന് കടലിടുക്കിന്റെ തീരങ്ങളില് നീന്തരുതെന്ന മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് ബോഡുകള് പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടതിന്റെ ഫോട്ടോ എത്ര പത്രങ്ങളില് വന്നു? ഇങ്ങനെ ഒളിച്ചുവെക്കാന് കഴിയുന്നതാണോ ഈ വന് ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങള്?
ഇതോടൊപ്പം ചോദിക്കേണ്ട ചില ചോദ്യങ്ങള് കൂടിയുണ്ട്. സ്വന്തം നാട്ടുകാരുടെ ക്ഷേമത്തിലും നാടിന്റെ പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണത്തിലും താല്പര്യം പൂണ്ട് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പെട്രോളിയത്തോട് ബില്യണുകള് ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തി വാങ്ങുന്ന ഒബാമ, ഈ ആവേശത്തിന്റെ പത്തിലൊരംശം എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് ഇന്ത്യന് മണ്ണില് അമേരിക്കയുടെ സ്വന്തം യൂനിയന് കാര്ബൈഡ് വിതച്ച വിനാശത്തിന്റെ വിഷയത്തില് കാണിക്കുന്നില്ല? ചുരുങ്ങിയത് ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വൃത്തികെട്ട ഈ വ്യവസായ ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ കാരണക്കാരനായ ആ വ്യക്തിയെ ഒന്ന് ഇങ്ങോട്ട് നാട് കടത്തുകയെങ്കിലും ചെയ്യുമോ? വെറുക്കപ്പെട്ട ആ വ്യക്തിക്ക് ഇനിയും ചുവപ്പ് പരവതാനി വിരിക്കാന് കഴിയില്ലെന്നറിയാവുന്ന നമ്മുടെ മന്മോഹനും കൂട്ടരും അങ്ങനെയെങ്കിലും പതിനായിരക്കണക്കിന് ഇന്ത്യക്കാരുടെ ആത്മാക്കള്ക്ക് മോക്ഷം വാങ്ങിക്കൊടുക്കട്ടെ. 11 അമേരിക്കക്കാരുടെ ജീവന് തുല്യമല്ലെങ്കിലും ഇത്രയധികം ഇന്ത്യക്കാരുടെ ജീവനും അല്പമെങ്കിലും വിലയുണ്ടെന്ന് സമ്മതിക്കാനുളള സുവര്ണാവസരമാണിത് ഒബാമക്ക്.

ഫലസ്തീനികളും അവരെ പിന്തുണക്കുന്നവരും പബ്ലിക് റിലേഷനില് വളരെയൊന്നും മുന്നിലല്ല. എന്നല്ല, ഇസ്രായേലിനെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് ആ വിഷയത്തില് തീരെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാത്തവരും അതിന് കാര്യമായി പണം മുടക്കാത്തവരുമാണ്. ഇസ്രായേലാകട്ടെ ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും മുന്തിയ ഏജന്സികളെ പബ്ലിക് റിലേഷന് നിയമിക്കുകയും തങ്ങളുടെ കേസ് പരമാവധി പൊലിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് വേണ്ടി അതീവ ജാഗ്രതയോടെ പരിശ്രമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. തികച്ചും ഏകപക്ഷീയമായ ഈ യുദ്ധം ഇതുവരെ ജൂതരാഷ്ട്രം ജയിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഏതുതരം എതിര്പ്പിനെയും സെമിറ്റിക് വിരുദ്ധതയെന്ന മുദ്ര കുത്തി ഇല്ലാതാക്കാന് ഇസ്രായേലിന് കഴിഞ്ഞതായിരുന്നു അതിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനം. ഒപ്പം, ഹോളോകാസ്റ്റ് എന്ന വിശുദ്ധ പശുവിനെ തൊടുന്നവരെയൊക്കെ തൊട്ടുകൂടാത്തവരായി തീണ്ടാപ്പാടകലെ നിര്ത്താനും ഈ ഏജന്സികളുടെ കഠിനപരിശ്രമം മൂലം കഴിഞ്ഞു.
പക്ഷേ, കഴിഞ്ഞ കുറച്ച് വര്ഷങ്ങളായി ഇസ്രായേലിന്റെ കണക്കുകൂട്ടലുകള് പിഴക്കുന്നുണ്ടോ? ദുരിതമനുഭവിക്കുന്ന ഫലസ്തീന് ജനതയോടുള്ള പിന്തുണ ലോകത്തിലെ വിവിധ സമൂഹങ്ങളില് കൂടിവരുന്നുണ്ടോ? അങ്ങനെ ഫലസ്തീന് പ്രശ്നം ആഗോള സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ അജണ്ടയിലെ പ്രധാന ഇനമായി മാറുന്നുണ്ടോ? ഈ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്ക്കെല്ലാം അതേ എന്നാണ് മറുപടി എന്നതിന് ധാരാളം ഉദാഹരണങ്ങള് ഈയിടെയായി ലഭിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
ഒരു 15 വര്ഷം മുമ്പായിരുന്നെങ്കില്, പ്രശസ്ത പത്രപ്രവര്ത്തകയും ഗ്രന്ഥകാരിയും 57 വര്ഷത്തോളം വൈറ്റ് ഹൗസ് കറസ്പോണ്ടന്റുമായിരുന്ന ഹെലന് തോമസ് ഈയിടെ ഇസ്രായേലിനെതിരെ നടത്തിയ ആ വിവാദ അഭിപ്രായപ്രകടനത്തിന് മുതിരുമായിരുന്നില്ലെന്നല്ല, അങ്ങനെ ഒന്ന് ആലോചിക്കുക പോലും ചെയ്യുമായിരുന്നില്ല. ഗസ്സ സഹായക്കപ്പലിനെ ഇസ്രായേല് ആക്രമിച്ച് 9 പേരെ വധിച്ച സംഭവത്തില് ലോകം മുഴുവന് പ്രതിഷേധം തിളച്ചുമറിയുന്ന സന്ദര്ഭത്തില് ഇസ്രായേലിനെക്കുറിച്ച് അഭിപ്രായമാരാഞ്ഞ ജൂതപുരോഹിതനോട്, ജൂതന്മാര് ഫലസ്തീനില് നിന്ന് പുറത്ത് പോകണമെന്ന് മാത്രമല്ല, അവര് ഇസ്രായേല് തന്നെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് പോളണ്ടിലേക്കോ ജര്മനിയിലേക്കോ തിരിച്ച് വണ്ടി കയറണമെന്നാണ് അവര് പറഞ്ഞു കളഞ്ഞത്! അതിന്റെ പേരില് വൈറ്റ് ഹൗസ് കറസ്പോണ്ടന്റ് സ്ഥാനം ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് മാപ്പ് പറയാനും പത്രപ്രവര്ത്തന ജീവിതത്തില് നിന്ന് തന്നെ വിരമിക്കാനും നിര്ബന്ധിതയായെങ്കിലും, അങ്ങനെയൊരു പ്രസ്താവന അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും മുതിര്ന്ന പത്രപ്രവര്ത്തകയുടെ വായില് നിന്ന് വന്നുവെന്നത് അദ്ഭുതകരമായിത്തന്നെ അവശേഷിക്കുന്നു. ജൂതരാഷ്ട്രത്തെ ഇപ്പോള് ഏറ്റവുമധികം അലട്ടുന്ന ഈ വേവലാതിയാണ് അമേരിക്കന് വിദേശകാര്യ സെക്രട്ടറി ഹിലരി ക്ലിന്റന് ഈയിടെ പങ്കുവെച്ചത്. അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ജൂതകൂട്ടായ്മയായ അമേരിക്കന് ഇസ്രായേലി പബ്ലിക് അഫയേഴ്സ് കമ്മിറ്റിയുടെ വാഷിങ്ടണില് നടന്ന വാര്ഷിക കോണ്ഫറന്സിനെ അഭിമുഖീകരിച്ച് അവര് പറഞ്ഞതിന്റെ സാരമിതായിരുന്നു: 1993 മുതല് 2001 വരെ 8 വര്ഷം അമേരിക്കന് പ്രസിഡന്റായിരുന്ന ബില് ക്ലിന്റന്റെ ഭാര്യയായി, പ്രഥമ വനിതയുടെ പദവി അലങ്കരിച്ച് താന് ലോകത്തിന്റെ വിവിധഭാഗങ്ങളില് സഞ്ചരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആ സന്ദര്ശനങ്ങളില് താനും ഭര്ത്താവും നേരിടാറുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ചോദ്യങ്ങളില് വൈവിധ്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കില് ഇപ്പോള് വിദേശകാര്യ സെക്രട്ടറി എന്ന നിലയില് ലോകരാജ്യങ്ങള് സന്ദര്ശിക്കുമ്പോള് നേരിടുന്ന ഏറ്റവും സുപ്രധാന ചോദ്യം ഫലസ്തീനാണ്. ഇതെന്ത് കൊണ്ടെന്ന് അദ്ഭുതപ്പെടുകയും പ്രശ്നപരിഹാരാര്ഥം രണ്ട് സ്വതന്ത്ര രാജ്യങ്ങള് എന്ന ഫോര്മുല ഇസ്രായേലീ നേതാക്കളോട് ഇടക്കിടെ പറയാറുണ്ടെന്നും അവര് പറഞ്ഞു.
അമേരിക്കന് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ഒബാമ വരെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ ഇസ്രായേലീ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ബെന്യാമിന് നെതന്യാഹുവിനെ വിരുന്നിന് വിളിച്ചുവരുത്തി 'അവഹേളിക്കുന്ന' സംഭവങ്ങള് പുതുമയല്ലാതായി. കഴിഞ്ഞ മാര്ച്ച് 24ന് വൈറ്റ് ഹൗസില് ഒരുമണിക്കൂറോളം കാത്തിരുന്ന ശേഷം ഒബാമയോടൊപ്പം രാത്രി വിരുന്ന് കഴിക്കാതെ പോകേണ്ടിവന്ന സംഭവം ഓര്ക്കുക. അതിനും രണ്ടാഴ്ച മുമ്പ് വൈസ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ജോ ബിഡന്, ജറൂസലമില് നെതന്യാഹുവുമൊത്തുള്ള വിരുന്നിന് 90 മിനിറ്റ് വൈകിയെത്തി പ്രതിഷേധം അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നു. കിഴക്കന് ജറൂസലമില് പുതിയ ജൂതകുടിയേറ്റ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങള് നിര്മിക്കുന്നത് നിര്ത്തിവെക്കുന്നതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് ഇരുകൂട്ടര്ക്കും യോജിപ്പിലെത്താന് സാധിക്കാതെ പോയതായിരുന്നു ഇരു സംഭവങ്ങള്ക്കും കാരണം. ഫലസ്തീന് അനുകൂലമായ നിലപാട് മാറ്റമൊന്നും ഇതില് നിന്നു വായിച്ചെടുക്കണമെന്നില്ല. പക്ഷേ, നേരത്തേതന്നെ ബാലന്സ് ഇല്ലാത്ത തങ്ങളുടെ ഫലസ്തീന് നയം ഇനിയും ഒരുവശത്തേക്ക് തന്നെ തൂങ്ങിയാല് ഉണ്ടായേക്കാവുന്ന പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങള് തന്നെയാണ് അമേരിക്കന് നേതാക്കളെ അല്പമെങ്കിലും കടുത്ത ചില നിലപാടുകള്ക്ക് പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചത്.
ഇപ്പോള് ഫലസ്തീനികള്ക്കനുകൂലമായി ഉണ്ടായിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പബ്ലിക് റിലേഷന് മുന്തൂക്കമാണ് അവര്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി ശബ്ദിക്കുന്ന പ്രമുഖ ആക്ടിവിസ്റ്റുകളെയും ബുദ്ധിജീവികളെയുമൊക്കെ ഗസ്സയും വെസ്റ്റ് ബാങ്കും സന്ദര്ശിക്കുന്നതില് നിന്ന് തടയാന് ജൂതരാഷ്ട്രത്തെ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിന്റെ അവസാനത്തെ ഇരയാണ് ജൂതവംശജനും പ്രമുഖ ബുദ്ധിജീവിയുമായ നോം ചോംസ്കി. കഴിഞ്ഞ മേയില് വെസ്റ്റ് ബാങ്കിലെ ബീര്സൈത്ത് സര്വകലാശാലയില് പ്രഭാഷണം നടത്താനിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ജോര്ദാനില് നിന്ന് ഫലസ്തീന് മണ്ണിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിപ്പിക്കാന് ഇസ്രായേല് ആഭ്യന്തര മന്ത്രാലയം അനുവദിച്ചില്ല. ചോംസ്കിയെപ്പോലെത്തന്നെ ജൂതരാഷ്ട്രം ഭ്രഷ്ട് കല്പിച്ച പ്രമുഖ ചിന്തകനാണ് നോര്മന് ഫിങ്കല്സ്റ്റൈന്. 'എ ഫെയര്വെല് റ്റു ഇസ്രായേല്' (ഇസ്രായേലിനൊരു യാത്രാമൊഴി)എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ കര്ത്താവായ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കിട്ടുന്ന വേദികളിലെല്ലാം എതിര്ക്കുകയും അടിച്ചിരുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുകയാണ്. ബ്രിട്ടനിലെ റെസ്പെക്ട് പാര്ട്ടി നേതാവ് ജോര്ജ് ഗാലോവെ, ഇസ്ലാം സ്വീകരിച്ച പത്രപ്രവര്ത്തക യിവോണ് റിഡ്ലി തുടങ്ങിയവരും ഇസ്രായേലിന്റെ കണ്ണിലെ കരടുകളാണ്. ഫലസ്തീന് അനുകൂലമായി ആഗോളതലത്തില് പൊതുജനാഭിപ്രായം ശക്തിപ്പെടുന്നതിനുണ്ടായ രണ്ട് സുപ്രധാന കാരണങ്ങളിലൊന്ന് ആയുധമുപയോഗിച്ച ചെറുത്തുനില്പ് മയപ്പെടുത്താന് ഹമാസ് തീരുമാനിച്ചതാണ്. 1987-1991 കാലയളവില് വെറും കല്ലുകള് മാത്രം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ജൂതസേനയെ നേരിട്ട ഇന്തിഫാദയുടെ ഈ നിലപാടുമാറ്റം ജൂതരാഷ്ട്രത്തെ വിറളി പിടിപ്പിച്ചെന്ന് പറയുന്നതാകും ശരി. ഇതിന് പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചതാകട്ടെ, തുര്ക്കിയും. നേരത്തേ ഇറാനില് നിന്ന് മാത്രമാണ് ഒരു ഗവണ്മെന്റിന്റെ മുഴുവന് പിന്തുണയും ഹമാസിന് ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഈയിടെയായി അതിന് ഇടിവ് പറ്റിയപ്പോള് ആ വിടവിലേക്ക് തുര്ക്കി കയറുകയായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്, ഇറാനില് നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി പ്രായോഗിക നിലപാടുകളില് ഊന്നി നില്ക്കാനുള്ള ഉപദേശമാണ് തുര്ക്കി പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി റജബ് ത്വയ്യിബ് ഉര്ദുഗാനില് നിന്ന് ഹമാസിന് ലഭിച്ചത്. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെയാണ് ഫ്രീഡം ഫേ്ളാട്ടിലയുടെ ഭാഗമായ തുര്ക്കിയുടെ മാവി മര്മറ കപ്പലിനെ ഇസ്രായേല് ആക്രമിച്ചതിനെത്തുടര്ന്ന് ഇനിയുള്ള സഹായക്കപ്പലുകള്ക്ക് തങ്ങളുടെ സൈനികക്കപ്പലിന്റെ സഹായം ലഭ്യമാക്കാമെന്ന ഇറാന്റെ ഓഫര് ഹമാസ് തള്ളിക്കളഞ്ഞത്. അമേരിക്കയും യൂറോപ്പുമായും നല്ല ബന്ധമുള്ള തുര്ക്കിയെ കൂടെക്കൂട്ടുന്നത് എന്തുകൊണ്ടും നല്ലതാണെന്ന് ഹമാസ് കരുതിയതിനെ ഈ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തില് കുറ്റം പറയാന് കഴിയില്ല. തുര്ക്കിയുടെ ഇടപെടല് ഫലസ്തീന് പ്രശ്നത്തെ സഹായിച്ചതിന്റെ തെളിവാണ് യൂറോപ്യന് യൂനിയന്റെ അധ്യക്ഷത വഹിക്കുന്ന സ്പെയിന് ഇസ്രായേലിനോട് ഗസ്സക്ക് മേലുള്ള ഉപരോധം നീക്കണമെന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് രംഗത്തെത്തിയത്്. ഇസ്രായേലിന് കരുത്തനായ ഒരു മുസ്ലിം സഖ്യകക്ഷിയെയാണ് തുര്ക്കിയുടെ കൂടുമാറലിലൂടെ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്.
ഒരു സംഗതി ഇപ്പോള് തെളിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു: ഫലസ്തീനികള് അഹിംസാ സമരം തുടരുകയും തുര്ക്കി ഫലസ്തീന് പ്രശ്നത്തെ ഇതുപോലെ ശക്തമായി പിന്തുണക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയുമാണെങ്കില്, പ്രശ്നം തീര്ച്ചയായും പുതിയ വഴിത്തിരിവിലെത്തുകതന്നെ ചെയ്യും.

ഒരു 15 വര്ഷം മുമ്പായിരുന്നെങ്കില്, പ്രശസ്ത പത്രപ്രവര്ത്തകയും ഗ്രന്ഥകാരിയും 57 വര്ഷത്തോളം വൈറ്റ് ഹൗസ് കറസ്പോണ്ടന്റുമായിരുന്ന ഹെലന് തോമസ് ഈയിടെ ഇസ്രായേലിനെതിരെ നടത്തിയ ആ വിവാദ അഭിപ്രായപ്രകടനത്തിന് മുതിരുമായിരുന്നില്ലെന്നല്ല, അങ്ങനെ ഒന്ന് ആലോചിക്കുക പോലും ചെയ്യുമായിരുന്നില്ല. ഗസ്സ സഹായക്കപ്പലിനെ ഇസ്രായേല് ആക്രമിച്ച് 9 പേരെ വധിച്ച സംഭവത്തില് ലോകം മുഴുവന് പ്രതിഷേധം തിളച്ചുമറിയുന്ന സന്ദര്ഭത്തില് ഇസ്രായേലിനെക്കുറിച്ച് അഭിപ്രായമാരാഞ്ഞ ജൂതപുരോഹിതനോട്, ജൂതന്മാര് ഫലസ്തീനില് നിന്ന് പുറത്ത് പോകണമെന്ന് മാത്രമല്ല, അവര് ഇസ്രായേല് തന്നെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് പോളണ്ടിലേക്കോ ജര്മനിയിലേക്കോ തിരിച്ച് വണ്ടി കയറണമെന്നാണ് അവര് പറഞ്ഞു കളഞ്ഞത്! അതിന്റെ പേരില് വൈറ്റ് ഹൗസ് കറസ്പോണ്ടന്റ് സ്ഥാനം ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് മാപ്പ് പറയാനും പത്രപ്രവര്ത്തന ജീവിതത്തില് നിന്ന് തന്നെ വിരമിക്കാനും നിര്ബന്ധിതയായെങ്കിലും, അങ്ങനെയൊരു പ്രസ്താവന അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും മുതിര്ന്ന പത്രപ്രവര്ത്തകയുടെ വായില് നിന്ന് വന്നുവെന്നത് അദ്ഭുതകരമായിത്തന്നെ അവശേഷിക്കുന്നു. ജൂതരാഷ്ട്രത്തെ ഇപ്പോള് ഏറ്റവുമധികം അലട്ടുന്ന ഈ വേവലാതിയാണ് അമേരിക്കന് വിദേശകാര്യ സെക്രട്ടറി ഹിലരി ക്ലിന്റന് ഈയിടെ പങ്കുവെച്ചത്. അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ജൂതകൂട്ടായ്മയായ അമേരിക്കന് ഇസ്രായേലി പബ്ലിക് അഫയേഴ്സ് കമ്മിറ്റിയുടെ വാഷിങ്ടണില് നടന്ന വാര്ഷിക കോണ്ഫറന്സിനെ അഭിമുഖീകരിച്ച് അവര് പറഞ്ഞതിന്റെ സാരമിതായിരുന്നു: 1993 മുതല് 2001 വരെ 8 വര്ഷം അമേരിക്കന് പ്രസിഡന്റായിരുന്ന ബില് ക്ലിന്റന്റെ ഭാര്യയായി, പ്രഥമ വനിതയുടെ പദവി അലങ്കരിച്ച് താന് ലോകത്തിന്റെ വിവിധഭാഗങ്ങളില് സഞ്ചരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആ സന്ദര്ശനങ്ങളില് താനും ഭര്ത്താവും നേരിടാറുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ചോദ്യങ്ങളില് വൈവിധ്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കില് ഇപ്പോള് വിദേശകാര്യ സെക്രട്ടറി എന്ന നിലയില് ലോകരാജ്യങ്ങള് സന്ദര്ശിക്കുമ്പോള് നേരിടുന്ന ഏറ്റവും സുപ്രധാന ചോദ്യം ഫലസ്തീനാണ്. ഇതെന്ത് കൊണ്ടെന്ന് അദ്ഭുതപ്പെടുകയും പ്രശ്നപരിഹാരാര്ഥം രണ്ട് സ്വതന്ത്ര രാജ്യങ്ങള് എന്ന ഫോര്മുല ഇസ്രായേലീ നേതാക്കളോട് ഇടക്കിടെ പറയാറുണ്ടെന്നും അവര് പറഞ്ഞു.
അമേരിക്കന് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ഒബാമ വരെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ ഇസ്രായേലീ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ബെന്യാമിന് നെതന്യാഹുവിനെ വിരുന്നിന് വിളിച്ചുവരുത്തി 'അവഹേളിക്കുന്ന' സംഭവങ്ങള് പുതുമയല്ലാതായി. കഴിഞ്ഞ മാര്ച്ച് 24ന് വൈറ്റ് ഹൗസില് ഒരുമണിക്കൂറോളം കാത്തിരുന്ന ശേഷം ഒബാമയോടൊപ്പം രാത്രി വിരുന്ന് കഴിക്കാതെ പോകേണ്ടിവന്ന സംഭവം ഓര്ക്കുക. അതിനും രണ്ടാഴ്ച മുമ്പ് വൈസ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ജോ ബിഡന്, ജറൂസലമില് നെതന്യാഹുവുമൊത്തുള്ള വിരുന്നിന് 90 മിനിറ്റ് വൈകിയെത്തി പ്രതിഷേധം അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നു. കിഴക്കന് ജറൂസലമില് പുതിയ ജൂതകുടിയേറ്റ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങള് നിര്മിക്കുന്നത് നിര്ത്തിവെക്കുന്നതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് ഇരുകൂട്ടര്ക്കും യോജിപ്പിലെത്താന് സാധിക്കാതെ പോയതായിരുന്നു ഇരു സംഭവങ്ങള്ക്കും കാരണം. ഫലസ്തീന് അനുകൂലമായ നിലപാട് മാറ്റമൊന്നും ഇതില് നിന്നു വായിച്ചെടുക്കണമെന്നില്ല. പക്ഷേ, നേരത്തേതന്നെ ബാലന്സ് ഇല്ലാത്ത തങ്ങളുടെ ഫലസ്തീന് നയം ഇനിയും ഒരുവശത്തേക്ക് തന്നെ തൂങ്ങിയാല് ഉണ്ടായേക്കാവുന്ന പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങള് തന്നെയാണ് അമേരിക്കന് നേതാക്കളെ അല്പമെങ്കിലും കടുത്ത ചില നിലപാടുകള്ക്ക് പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചത്.
ഇപ്പോള് ഫലസ്തീനികള്ക്കനുകൂലമായി ഉണ്ടായിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പബ്ലിക് റിലേഷന് മുന്തൂക്കമാണ് അവര്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി ശബ്ദിക്കുന്ന പ്രമുഖ ആക്ടിവിസ്റ്റുകളെയും ബുദ്ധിജീവികളെയുമൊക്കെ ഗസ്സയും വെസ്റ്റ് ബാങ്കും സന്ദര്ശിക്കുന്നതില് നിന്ന് തടയാന് ജൂതരാഷ്ട്രത്തെ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിന്റെ അവസാനത്തെ ഇരയാണ് ജൂതവംശജനും പ്രമുഖ ബുദ്ധിജീവിയുമായ നോം ചോംസ്കി. കഴിഞ്ഞ മേയില് വെസ്റ്റ് ബാങ്കിലെ ബീര്സൈത്ത് സര്വകലാശാലയില് പ്രഭാഷണം നടത്താനിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ജോര്ദാനില് നിന്ന് ഫലസ്തീന് മണ്ണിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിപ്പിക്കാന് ഇസ്രായേല് ആഭ്യന്തര മന്ത്രാലയം അനുവദിച്ചില്ല. ചോംസ്കിയെപ്പോലെത്തന്നെ ജൂതരാഷ്ട്രം ഭ്രഷ്ട് കല്പിച്ച പ്രമുഖ ചിന്തകനാണ് നോര്മന് ഫിങ്കല്സ്റ്റൈന്. 'എ ഫെയര്വെല് റ്റു ഇസ്രായേല്' (ഇസ്രായേലിനൊരു യാത്രാമൊഴി)എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ കര്ത്താവായ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കിട്ടുന്ന വേദികളിലെല്ലാം എതിര്ക്കുകയും അടിച്ചിരുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുകയാണ്. ബ്രിട്ടനിലെ റെസ്പെക്ട് പാര്ട്ടി നേതാവ് ജോര്ജ് ഗാലോവെ, ഇസ്ലാം സ്വീകരിച്ച പത്രപ്രവര്ത്തക യിവോണ് റിഡ്ലി തുടങ്ങിയവരും ഇസ്രായേലിന്റെ കണ്ണിലെ കരടുകളാണ്. ഫലസ്തീന് അനുകൂലമായി ആഗോളതലത്തില് പൊതുജനാഭിപ്രായം ശക്തിപ്പെടുന്നതിനുണ്ടായ രണ്ട് സുപ്രധാന കാരണങ്ങളിലൊന്ന് ആയുധമുപയോഗിച്ച ചെറുത്തുനില്പ് മയപ്പെടുത്താന് ഹമാസ് തീരുമാനിച്ചതാണ്. 1987-1991 കാലയളവില് വെറും കല്ലുകള് മാത്രം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ജൂതസേനയെ നേരിട്ട ഇന്തിഫാദയുടെ ഈ നിലപാടുമാറ്റം ജൂതരാഷ്ട്രത്തെ വിറളി പിടിപ്പിച്ചെന്ന് പറയുന്നതാകും ശരി. ഇതിന് പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചതാകട്ടെ, തുര്ക്കിയും. നേരത്തേ ഇറാനില് നിന്ന് മാത്രമാണ് ഒരു ഗവണ്മെന്റിന്റെ മുഴുവന് പിന്തുണയും ഹമാസിന് ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഈയിടെയായി അതിന് ഇടിവ് പറ്റിയപ്പോള് ആ വിടവിലേക്ക് തുര്ക്കി കയറുകയായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്, ഇറാനില് നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി പ്രായോഗിക നിലപാടുകളില് ഊന്നി നില്ക്കാനുള്ള ഉപദേശമാണ് തുര്ക്കി പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി റജബ് ത്വയ്യിബ് ഉര്ദുഗാനില് നിന്ന് ഹമാസിന് ലഭിച്ചത്. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെയാണ് ഫ്രീഡം ഫേ്ളാട്ടിലയുടെ ഭാഗമായ തുര്ക്കിയുടെ മാവി മര്മറ കപ്പലിനെ ഇസ്രായേല് ആക്രമിച്ചതിനെത്തുടര്ന്ന് ഇനിയുള്ള സഹായക്കപ്പലുകള്ക്ക് തങ്ങളുടെ സൈനികക്കപ്പലിന്റെ സഹായം ലഭ്യമാക്കാമെന്ന ഇറാന്റെ ഓഫര് ഹമാസ് തള്ളിക്കളഞ്ഞത്. അമേരിക്കയും യൂറോപ്പുമായും നല്ല ബന്ധമുള്ള തുര്ക്കിയെ കൂടെക്കൂട്ടുന്നത് എന്തുകൊണ്ടും നല്ലതാണെന്ന് ഹമാസ് കരുതിയതിനെ ഈ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തില് കുറ്റം പറയാന് കഴിയില്ല. തുര്ക്കിയുടെ ഇടപെടല് ഫലസ്തീന് പ്രശ്നത്തെ സഹായിച്ചതിന്റെ തെളിവാണ് യൂറോപ്യന് യൂനിയന്റെ അധ്യക്ഷത വഹിക്കുന്ന സ്പെയിന് ഇസ്രായേലിനോട് ഗസ്സക്ക് മേലുള്ള ഉപരോധം നീക്കണമെന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് രംഗത്തെത്തിയത്്. ഇസ്രായേലിന് കരുത്തനായ ഒരു മുസ്ലിം സഖ്യകക്ഷിയെയാണ് തുര്ക്കിയുടെ കൂടുമാറലിലൂടെ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്.
ഒരു സംഗതി ഇപ്പോള് തെളിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു: ഫലസ്തീനികള് അഹിംസാ സമരം തുടരുകയും തുര്ക്കി ഫലസ്തീന് പ്രശ്നത്തെ ഇതുപോലെ ശക്തമായി പിന്തുണക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയുമാണെങ്കില്, പ്രശ്നം തീര്ച്ചയായും പുതിയ വഴിത്തിരിവിലെത്തുകതന്നെ ചെയ്യും.

A flawed German view on Islam!
The following German view on Islam was sent to me by a friend of mine via an email. It lacks objectivity in many aspects and is flawed completely for reasons explained hereunder.
First of all, the author makes a general assumption that the majority of peace-loving Muslims are silent and considers them as accomplices in the criminal deeds of a few fanatics. He argues that these fanatics have taken over Islam as they are the ones who dominate. They are the ones who kill. In reality, this is a completely flawed assumption. In effect, the “silent” majority is still in control and they’ve been speaking out against the crimes committed by these few. If the author and people of his ilk are unable to follow these on the mainstream media, then that is an issue even those ‘silent’ Muslims would love very much to be solved! That is: the media depicts them only as part of a problem not as a solution. For example, several well-known Muslim scholars and organizations have come forward not only to condemn the terrorist attacks – be it 9/11, London’s 07/07 or India’s 26/11 – but also to proactively interfere in the society to bridge the gaps and fill the vacuum left behind by these fanatics. However, the media does not show any interest in these proactive steps taken by the Muslim community, and continues to spit venom against the whole community. The author and several hundreds like him pretend like an ostrich and are just beating around the bush. A simple attempt at Google will yield them good results!
Now, turning to the otherside of the problem, who created these fanatics? Just have a look at the 9/11 attackers. Osama Bin Laden and his ilk were the best friends of US when they were fighting against the Soviet Union. Saddam Hussein? It was the US who armed him against Iran. Thank God, we have a very short memory!
There is one more side to the story. Who have killed more people in the past 100 years or so? Are these terrorists or those so-called “civilised” nation and people? Think of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Why we are not calling those who committed this mass murder of at least two hundred thousands of innocent civilians terrorists? Any idea on how many were killed in the Vietnam war? Now, going by the same ‘German’ theory, what we call all those ‘silent majorities’ who have not uttered a word against all these atrocities? Are they too part of these criminal acts? In this case also, is the religion blamed?
Let’s call a spade a spade.

Memoir for a close friend who passed away recently
There are times in our life when time stops in front of us. We would be stuck in a position unable to move, talk or believe what we've just heard.
One such time was when I heard the heart-breaking news of the passing away of brother Abdul Aziz Sahib (Kalamassery) in March 2009. Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajioon (To Allah we belong, and to Him is our return).
He left for home from Ajman where he was running a business upon hearing the news of the hospitalization of his ageing father. However, fate has something different in stock for him. May Allah forgive his sins and enter him in His eternal paradise. aameen.
I remember Abdul Aziz saheb as a very lovely and enthusiastic person, full of optimism and a pious heart. He held no grudge towards any one. Such was his remembrance of akhirah (the life after death) that he had told his eldest son, who is studying in Santapuram Al Jamia Al Islamiya, to deliver a lecture on the topic at a family gathering, which was supposed to be held the week after his death. The son had even prepared some notes for the same by referring books from his university library. A non-Muslim person, whom Br. Abdul Aziz was regularly contacting to impart the true message of Islam, embraced Islam immediately upon hearing the news of his death. What would you need in this life?
Both of our families had gone for a trip to Ezhattumugham near the famous Athirapally-Vazhachal waterfalls, last year. It was his plan which was made while we were travelling together to India during the summer 2008, immediately after I dropped my first relocation plan to Qatar. He had been to Ezhattumugham before, along with his father who was not going out regularly due to his poor health. We enjoyed the trip thoroughly, especially his and my children. The picturesque scenes at Ezhattumugham mesmerized all of us. We had had a nice lunch (with kappa and beef) and the evening snacks together. I cherish those sweet memories now with tears welling up in my eyes.
I can do only one thing for you now: May the Almighty join us together in His eternal paradise, aameen.
A trip down memory lane
These are some photos from a recent trip to Khasab in the Musandam governorate of Sultanate of Oman which was really a memorable one. This part of Oman is a barren, mountaineous terrain with picturesque back waters. Dolphins are seen in abundance in these waters. A village in the midst of a huge valley is really eye-catching. Tourists visit this place during the period between November to April every year. This place is highly strategic for Oman.

Response to article by Thomas Friedman: Israel's Goals in Gaza?
Dear Mr. Friedman,
Thank you for your article (in New York Times dated 14 Jan 2008 and in Gulf News, Dubai, on 18 Jan 2008) about Israel's recent assault against Gaza. You have explained in clear terms what should be Israel's goals for such an attack and underscored the need to educate Hamas, a terrorist organisation by your definition, and creating a clear choice for Hamas: destroying Israel or building Gaza.
I regret to point out to you frankly, Mr. Friedman, that there is sheer hypocrisy and a clear lack of objectivity in the lines you wrote. The fundamental human values in all of us, let alone the basic journalism ethics you are supposed to be holding high (especially being a Pulitzer-prize winning columnist), require us to be truthful and honest in what we say or do. Even if you have had a short memory, you could have borne in mind the fact there was a democratically elected government in Gaza, led by the resistant movement, Hamas, for the past one and half years trying to build Gaza by all means. But, Israel was strangulating that tiny sect of land of 360 square kilometers with a population of 1.5 million (the most densely populated piece of earth on the planet) through crippling sanctions. Why? Because, Israel did not like Hamas! Is it what you call democracy? Is it what you call the American values of freedom and liberty? Weren't it the people of Gaza who chose Hamas as their rightful rulers. So, it was only right on Israel's part to let Hamas rule them and build Gaza. But, what Israel did was declaring Hamas as their enemy and creating hurdles in all its efforts to rule Gaza in a democratic way.
By destroying Israel, you might have meant the rocket attack by Hamas in southern Israel immediately after the expiry of the ceasefire. For a moment, let's forget about the reality of these "rockets," what they are made of, and the "ferocity" – or lack of it – of those rockets. Just reverse your memory to mid-November 2008 when an Israeli raid in Gaza killed at least six Palestinians whereas the retaliatory Hamas rocket attacks didn't even injure any one! (read about this in this website created by an Israeli peace organisation: www.gush-shalom.org): What will you do if you are surrounded by an enemy with heavy weapons of mass destruction, who destroys your daily life, and denies you access to water, power, medicine and all those basic things of life? But, alas, there wasn't a single line in your lengthy article about these pathetic conditions the Gazans were in throughout the past one and half years!
You and your ilk call Hamas a terrorist organisation. But remember, who was this peace-loving, democratic, free Israel just before its creation in 1948? At that time, it was operating as some of the word's most dreaded terrorist gangs like Irgun, Haganah and Stern. Since then, they had been mercilessly butchering Palestinian people. (You can have a list of these massacres in this website: http://guardian.150m.com/palestine/israeli-massacres.htm) Some, five million people have been kicked out of Palestine to make way for Israel and the 'democratic' Israel still denies them the right of return. In the latest assault alone, Israel has killed more than 400 children and 200 women and destroyed some 20,000 homes! Of the total number of killed (1250 according to latest available figures), two thirds are civilians!
So, who is destroying whom? Who is building what? Correct me, if I'm wrong, Mr. Friedman!

Israel's Goals in Gaza?

I have only one question about Israel's military operation in Gaza: What is the goal? Is it the education of Hamas or the eradication of Hamas? I hope that it's the education of Hamas. Let me explain why.
I was one of the few people who argued back in 2006 that Israel actually won the war in Lebanon started by Hezbollah. You need to study that war and its aftermath to understand Gaza and how it is part of a new strategic ballgame in the Arab-Israel arena, which will demand of the Obama team a new approach.
What Hezbollah did in 2006 — in launching an unprovoked war across the U.N.-recognized Israel-Lebanon border, after Israel had unilaterally withdrawn from Lebanon — was to both upend Israel's longstanding peace strategy and to unveil a new phase in the Hezbollah-Iran war strategy against Israel.
There have always been two camps in Israel when it comes to the logic of peace, notes Gidi Grinstein, president of the Israeli think tank, the Reut Institute: One camp says that all the problems Israel faces from the Palestinians or Lebanese emanate from occupying their territories. "Therefore, the fundamental problem is staying — and the fundamental remedy is leaving," says Grinstein.
The other camp argues that Israel's Arab foes are implacably hostile and leaving would only invite more hostility. Therefore, at least when it comes to the Palestinians, Israel needs to control their territories indefinitely. Since the mid-1990s, the first camp has dominated Israeli thinking. This led to the negotiated and unilateral withdrawals from the West Bank, Lebanon and Gaza.
Hezbollah's unprovoked attack from Lebanon into Israel in 2006 both undermined the argument that withdrawal led to security and presented Israel with a much more vexing military strategy aimed at neutralizing Israel's military superiority. Hezbollah created a very "flat" military network, built on small teams of guerrillas and mobile missile-batteries, deeply embedded in the local towns and villages.
And this Hezbollah force, rather than confronting Israel's Army head-on, focused on demoralizing Israeli civilians with rockets in their homes, challenging Israel to inflict massive civilian casualties in order to hit Hezbollah fighters and, when Israel did strike Hezbollah and also killed civilians, inflaming the Arab-Muslim street, making life very difficult for Arab or European leaders aligned with Israel.
Israel's counterstrategy was to use its Air Force to pummel Hezbollah and, while not directly targeting the Lebanese civilians with whom Hezbollah was intertwined, to inflict substantial property damage and collateral casualties on Lebanon at large. It was not pretty, but it was logical. Israel basically said that when dealing with a nonstate actor, Hezbollah, nested among civilians, the only long-term source of deterrence was to exact enough pain on the civilians — the families and employers of the militants — to restrain Hezbollah in the future.
Israel's military was not focused on the morning after the war in Lebanon — when Hezbollah declared victory and the Israeli press declared defeat. It was focused on the morning after the morning after, when all the real business happens in the Middle East. That's when Lebanese civilians, in anguish, said to Hezbollah: "What were you thinking? Look what destruction you have visited on your own community! For what? For whom?"
Here's what Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah's leader, said the morning after the morning after about his decision to start that war by abducting two Israeli soldiers on July 12, 2006: "We did not think, even 1 percent, that the capture would lead to a war at this time and of this magnitude. You ask me, if I had known on July 11 ... that the operation would lead to such a war, would I do it? I say no, absolutely not."
That was the education of Hezbollah. Has Israel seen its last conflict with Hezbollah? I doubt it. But Hezbollah, which has done nothing for Hamas, will think three times next time. That is probably all Israel can achieve with a nonstate actor.
In Gaza, I still can't tell if Israel is trying to eradicate Hamas or trying to "educate" Hamas, by inflicting a heavy death toll on Hamas militants and heavy pain on the Gaza population. If it is out to destroy Hamas, casualties will be horrific and the aftermath could be Somalia-like chaos. If it is out to educate Hamas, Israel may have achieved its aims. Now its focus, and the Obama team's focus, should be on creating a clear choice for Hamas for the world to see: Are you about destroying Israel or building Gaza?
But that requires diplomacy. Israel de facto recognizes Hamas's right to rule Gaza and to provide for the well-being and security of the people of Gaza — which was actually Hamas's original campaign message, not rocketing Israel. And, in return, Hamas has to signal a willingness to assume responsibility for a lasting cease-fire and to abandon efforts to change the strategic equation with Israel by deploying longer and longer range rockets. That's the only deal. Let's give it a try.

Correspondence with Kesav Pillai & Kannan
Dear Mr. Pillai and Mr. Kannan
I’ve been following a series of your email messages that were primarily targeting Islam and its prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). A news item from Saudi Arabia that dates back to 2002 was picked up by someone to show that Muslims are savages and there were some comments about the Prophet too.
While I acknowledge your freedom to make any comments on anything under the sun or beyond it, do not assume that what you were propagating all these days was the only thing that is happening in the world. I can cite hundreds of examples of barbaric things that are happening in and around the world to say that the religion of those people who commit those barbaric act is savage and violent. But, I would not blame such things on someone’s faith because of common sense. Moreover, my faith also prevents me from doing so. For instance, I can’t ever say that the acts of the Ranbir Sena, a ruthless army owned by upper caste Hindus in Bihar who has earned notoriety by mercilessly murdering thousands of low caste Hindus there, are happening because of the Hindu religion. Also, those who paraded a dalit woman naked in the streets of Bellary, Uttar Pradesh were not doing that because Hinduism preaches them to do so. (Read the Hindu article on this: http://www.hinduonnet.com/2001/08/28/stories/01280006.htm) I can easily differentiate between the religious teachings and the barbarous acts of some of its followers.
In Madhya Pradesh, when a group of villagers burned Kuttu Bai, 65, in the funeral fire of her husband in the name of "sati" (Read BBC report on this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/2180380.stm), it was not the religion at fault, but people who were interpreting religious teachings for their vested interests were at fault. Examples are galore, but for sensible people, these are enough.
Now coming back to the Prophet’s subject, one of the main accusations against him is that he was advocating violence. Historical facts are at stake here. As I said before, for the sake of criticism, you can merely criticize anyone under the sun. But, if we do not want to sacrifice our integrity and show justice to history, we should be honest with historical facts that no one can deny. How can a man who and whose followers were mercilessly tortured by the polytheists of Makkah for continuous 13 years and who did not raise a single hand against his enemies throughout this period be described a preacher of violence? The Makkans imposed a tight embargo on him and his entire family and were cornered in a valley called Shiab Abi Talib for continuous three years and they were even eating leaves of trees to survive. Throughout this period, nobody was allowed by the Prophet to raise their hands against their enemies. His companions were tortured to such an extent that they used to come to him and tell him that why you are not doing anything to stop this from happening? His only response was to show patience. Even after migrating to Madina after these harsh 13 years, he was wishing for peace and wanted to lead a peaceful life. However, when the Quraish hunted him down there as well, he began to defend against such a ruthless enemy. And after conquering Makkah during his eight’th year in Madina, he pardoned the very people who fought him with such brutal force. These are historical facts no one can deny. Read articles by independent historians to get a clear picture. (For your reference, I'm attaching a PowerPoint presentation, please read it before you make any comment).
So, my friendly and sincere call to you is not to sacrifice your own integrity for the sake of criticism. Get your facts straight and do justice to history.
In the meantime, do not think that I justify any of those savage acts committed by Muslims elsewhere. But, my suggestion is that we should all stand together to fight barbaric acts by people of all faiths. They do not represent any religion, but own vested interests.

Correspondence with Mr. Jack Stone
Dear Mr. Stone,
It seems to me that your response missed the main point of the conversation: what I was trying to convey through the following incidents was that throughout the recent history of mankind, it was not any religion that precipitated the unjustified killing of innocent people, but the people who misrepresented it. I’m totally in agreement with you when Hitler, born into a Roman Catholic family, (your claim that he was an atheist is doubtful and you can clear it from this link: http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/mischedj/ca_hitler.html) killed millions of Jews he was not representing Christianity. I also agree with you when you say, Stalin, though being born into a Christian family, was a communist and killed hundreds of thousands of people to preserve his regime. The Japanese, whose majority believe in Buddhism, attacked Pearl Harbor killing more than 2,000 US soldiers and a few civilians, and the US, whose majority believe in Christianity, dropped two atom bombs in retaliation and killed 280,000 civilians and rendered another 200,000 homeless in the worst ever attack in human history on civilians. In Gujarat (unfortunately you are wrong here) at least 2000 people were killed by some fanatics who misrepresent the great religion of Hinduism. In the run up to setting up their homeland in Palestine and afterwards, Israel, which is a Jewish state, either killed or displaced five million Palestinians (refer to: www.guardian.150m.com/palestine/israeli-massacres.htm).
In all these incidents, we don’t blame any religion for the killings undertaken by the perpetrators. Then, whey would Osama Bin Laden’s religion is blamed for the unscrupulous terrorist attacks which killed innocent civilians? That is the point of contention here. If you do not call those who unleashed atom bombs against innocent civilians "Christian terrorists", but describe them as mere life-savers, why would you call a person, who was born into a Muslim family, an Islamic terrorist, though he misrepresents the Islamic values?
So, my point is clear. Let’s all – people of all religions and faiths – denounce terrorism in whatever form, whether it’s undertaken by a government or a group of misled and misinformed individuals. We can never compensate the pains and sufferings of a family that lost a loved one – whether they are Christian, Muslim or Hindu. Let’s all stand up for the common and shared values that the humanity cherished for ever and make this earth a peaceful place to live in harmony.
Having said this, please note that Islam or its holy book, The Quran, does not propagate terrorism as a tool to preach its teachings. Instead, it says: "Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious." (Chapter 16, Verse: 125).
One of the main teachings of Holy Quran is this: "If anyone slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people." (Chapter 5, Verse 13)

It seems to me that your response missed the main point of the conversation: what I was trying to convey through the following incidents was that throughout the recent history of mankind, it was not any religion that precipitated the unjustified killing of innocent people, but the people who misrepresented it. In Gujarat (unfortunately you are wrong here) at least 2000 people were killed by some fanatics who misrepresent the great religion of Hinduism. The essential lessons of the Prophet’s ascension

“GLORY to (God) Who did take His servant for a journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose precincts We did Bless, in order that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the one Who heareth and seeth (all things).”
— Holy Quran, 17:1
AL ISRAA Wal Mairaj was a very important event in the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Arabic word Al Israa literally means night journey and Al Mairaj means ascension referring to the passage of the Prophet from the Sacred Mosque (in Makkah) to the Farthest Mosque (Al Aqsa in Jerusalem) in a night and his ascension to the seven heavens in the same night where he was shown some of the signs of God.
On the night of Al Israa, the Prophet was in the house of his cousin Hind, daughter of Abu Talib, who was also called Umm Hani. Hind related that “The Messenger of God spent the night prayers and went to sleep. Just before dawn, the Prophet of God awoke us and we all offered the Fajr (dawn) prayers together. Following the prayers, Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, ‘O Umm Hani, I offered the night prayer in this place with you and then I went to Jerusalem and I prayed there, and as you see, I have just finished praying with you the dawn prayer.’ I answered, ‘O Prophet of God, do not tell this to the people, for they will not believe you and harm you.’ He said, ‘By God, I shall tell them.”
The Hadith literature and the Prophet’s biographies offer a detailed account of this miraculous but real journey, which drew criticism from polytheists of Makkah. Even some of those who followed Muhammad (peace be upon him) and believed in him began to have their doubts (about the journey).
Al Israa Wal Mairaj as narrated in Hadith literature and biographies was: On the night of Al Israa, the Prophet was awakened by Angel Gabriel who led a fantastic steed, called Buraq (lightning); it approached the Prophet, allowed him to mount and was off like an arrow over the mountains of Makkah and the sands of the desert toward the North.
The archangel accompanied them on this prodigious flight. When they reached Jerusalem, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prayed in Al Aqsa Mosque along with other Prophets of God who preceded him. Then, he mounted to the seven heavens. There he met the angels and was taken near the Throne of God. Holy Quran records the event thus: “By the Star when it goes down, your Companion is neither astray nor being misled, nor does he say (aught) of his own desire. It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: He was taught by One Mighty in power, endued with wisdom: for He appeared (in stately form) while He was in the highest part of the horizon. Then he approached and came closer; and was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; So did (God) convey the inspiration to His Servant – (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. The (Prophet’s) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? For indeed he saw Him at a second descent, near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass; near it is the Garden of Abode. Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!). His sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong!. For truly did he see, of the great signs of his Lord.” (Holy Quran, An-Najm, 1-18).
It was during this heavenly encounter that the Prophet received the command from Allah that all believers must offer five prayers each day. Before returning to the earth, Gabriel also took the Prophet to Paradise where the faithful would rejoice after their resurrection, and was shown scenes from the hell where various types of punishments were being meted out to the sinful.
The period that preceded Al Israa was the most difficult time in the life of the Prophet and the Muslims. The disbelievers of Makkah went too far in torturing the Muslims and forcing them twice to migrate to Abyssinia. The deaths in that year of Prophet’s uncle, Abu Talib, who protected Muhammad (peace be upon him) from his enemies, and his wife Khadija, who had been of much help to him during all his difficulties, had been a major shock to the messenger of Allah.
However, he remained steadfast and kept reminding the faithful that the atrocities against them were actually a test from Almighty Allah Who wants to prepare them for the sacred mission of spreading His message of truth the world over by themselves becoming a living example of Islam.
The Al Israa experience at this crucial point of time came as a blessing from God for the Muslims. Their faith in Allah and Islam was fortified by Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) journey to the presence of God. This helped them remain steadfast in their commitment to Islam’s message. The divine command during Al Mairaj that the believers must pray five times a day was an eternal tribute to the Prophet’s rendezvous with God.
The prayer itself is a form of the faithful’s dialogue and communication with the Creator. Al Israa wal Mairaj was thus a landmark and turning point in the life of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. The experience enabled him to fully grasp the unity of being in all its totality and perfection.

With reference to the report below that has been carried in your esteemed newspaper on 27 July, it's quite interesting to note that more and more inter-faith dialogues are taking place across the globe. Earlier last month, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, took the lead in bringing together scholars of different religions in the Spanish capital, Madrid, setting a good example for future dialogues among world's prominent religions. This assumes much significance especially as there is a growing tendency among people of different faiths to make a retreat unto their own faith and shut all the doors of dialogue. Events such as this will help promote mutual understanding among people about other faiths thereby spreading religious harmony and ensuring peaceful co-existence. One of the prime objectives of such gatherings should be promoting shared moral and family values that are more necessary now than ever.

New Haven, Connecticut: Senior Christian and Muslim scholars and leaders are meeting in the United States this week seeking common ground in their different faiths to foster better understanding between Islam and the West.
Hosted by Yale University Divinity School, the conference is the first public dialogue launched by Muslim intellectuals in the Common Word group that appealed to Christian leaders last year for discussions among theologians to promote peace.
Most US participants are Protestant theologians and church leaders, including some prominent evangelicals, but some Catholics and Jews also are taking part. The Muslims, both Sunnis and Shiites, hail from around the world.

Their conference comes just more than a week after King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia hosted an unprecedented meeting of Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists in Madrid and pledged to pursue interfaith dialogue.
"We have broken the ice of mistrust between the West and Islam with this initiative," said Mustafa Ceric, grand mufti of Bosnia. "In world affairs today, the rule should not be the argument of force but the force of argument."
Ceric, whose homeland in former Yugoslavia was torn apart by ethnic and religious strife in the 1990s, said it was time for serious dialogue among mainstream faith leaders after years in which violence by Islamist radicals has dominated the headlines.
Growing interest
Miroslav Volf, a Yale theologian co-hosting the sessions, agreed this and other recent interfaith encounters in Europe and the Middle East pointed to a growing interest in seeking more Christian-Muslim understanding. "There's definitely something in the air," the Croatian-born Protestant said.
The Common Word project, started last October by 138 Muslim scholars, says Christianity and Islam share two common core values - love of God and love of neighbour. The group says discussions on this among experts can help defuse tensions between the faiths.
Christian leaders have responded positively to the appeal.
The Common Word group, a multinational platform for mainstream faith in a religion with no central authority, will meet Anglicans in October and Pope Benedict in November.

Waiting for World War III: Hypocrisy thy name is Khalilzad!

In a recent interview with an Austrian daily, Zalmay Khalilzad, the US ambassador to the United Nations, was quoted as saying upheaval in the Middle East and Islamic Civilisation could cause another world war. He made this remark to the daily Die Presse noting that the region is going through a very difficult transformation phase and it has strengthened extremism and creates a breeding ground for terrorism. Mr. Khalilzad’s talk about world war at this juncture has to be taken seriously because of his proximity to the corridors of power in Washington. However, he might be silently calling himself a 'hypocrite' when the talk of a world war at this time completely exonerates the United States, given its disastrous role in turning the Middle East to a "place of turmoil" that it is now. Take for example, Palestine. The United States helped its pet country Israel to steal the land of Palestinians, destroy their homes and olive groves, shoot down their children in the streets, and abuse their women. Noted anti-war activist Paul Craig Roberts describes this situation in an article titled The Shame of Being an American: "The Palestinians have been walled off into ghettos, who cannot reach their farm lands or medical care or schools, who cannot drive on roads through Palestine, that have been constructed for Israelis only. Their ancient towns have been invaded by militant Zionist "settlers" under the protection of the Israeli army who beat and persecute the Palestinians and drive them out of their towns. They cannot allow their children outside their homes because they will be murdered by Israeli "settlers." The Palestinians who confront Israeli evil are called "terrorists." When Bush forced free elections on Palestine, the people voted for Hamas. Hamas is the organization that has stood up to Israel. This means, of course, that Hamas is evil, anti-Semitic, un-American and terrorist. The US and Israel responded by cutting off all funds to the new government. Democracy is permitted only if it produces the results Bush and Israel want. Israelis never practice terror. Only those who are in Israel's way are terrorists." And, Mr. Khalilzad says the world is on the brink of a world war because of the Islamic world! He further adds that some people in the Islamic world believe they should return to the time of the Prophet Mohammad (6th-7th century). It may take decades before some understand that they can remain Muslims and simultaneously join the modern world, he says. Instead of going into a discussion on why Mr. Khalilzad hates people who think that a world conceptualized by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is good for mankind, let's look at who else are contemplating a going back to earlier centuries. Take for example the Christian Zionists in the US who wields considerable influence on the US government. One prominent member of this group, John Hagee, pastor of the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas, announced in February 1997 that his church was donating over $1 million to Israel. Hagee claimed the funds would be used to help resettle Jews from the Soviet Union in the West Bank and Jerusalem. “We feel like the coming of Soviet Jews to Israel is a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy,” Hagee stated. When asked if he realized that support of Likud’s policies and the increase in Jewish settlements was at cross-purposes with US policy, Hagee answered: “I am a Bible scholar and a theologian, and from my perspective the law of God transcends the laws of the United States government and the US State Department.”If anyone thinks that these so-called Christian Zionists are only a few in the US, just read Donald Wagner, professor of religion and Middle Eastern studies at North Park University in Chicago, who wrote in a five-part article on Christian Zionism: "During the past two or three decades, the conservative Evangelical movement has been the fastest growing sector within the American Christian churches. Estimates of the number of evangelicals range from 100-130 million, out of which 20-25 percent could be classified as fundamentalist some 20-26 million Americans. Of the fundamentalists, most, but not all, are inclined to support the Christian Zionist position. A recent poll by the Pew Research Center noted that 58 percent of evangelicals believe in the Battle of Armageddon, an indicator that they would be predisposed to Christian Zionism." Response to Dutch daily, De Volkskrant, on an MP's call to ban Quran

Recently, Geert Wilders, a member of the Dutch parliament, has written a letter in the daily, De Volkskrant, that calls for a ban on Quran. I am deeply saddened, not because of the ferocity of the comments made by Mr. Wilders, but at the horrific ignorance expressed by an MP in that modern and civilized nation about one of the greatest scripts ever in the history of mankind that has touched millions of lives. I am sure he has unleashed his fury against the divine book without taking a bit of his time to go through the same, at least once. Had he done that, I am sure, he would have a different opinion.
He says “Quran calls on people to kill non-believers and rape woman”. The first statement (to kill non-believers) is a gross misinformation while the second (to rape women) a blatant lie. I invite him to read this verse from the holy book: "If anyone slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people." (Holy Quran, Chapter: 5, Verse : 32)
Quran starts its every chapter with this verse: “In the name of God, Most Merciful, Most Gracious….” Mercy, modesty, tolerance and forgiveness are some of the inherent qualities Quran teaches. The Arabic word for mercy is repeated more than 300 times in this script which calls its followers to show patience at the time of hardships, even when they are attacked by others. Likewise, the Arabic word for patience is repeated over 100 times. It says: "Nor can Goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (Evil) with what is better: then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate!" (Holy Quran, Chapter 41 Verses: 34, 35) Islam’s prophet, Muhammad, was sent as a mercy to mankind (Chapter 21, Verse: 107). The word Islam comes from the root word 'salaam' which means peace. It also means submitting one's will to Allah.
Having said this, it’s also true that Quran contains verses exhorting its followers to fight where there is oppression. The fight against oppression may, at times, require the use of force. In Islam, force can only be used to promote peace and justice and that should be done by a government authorized by people (resisting foreign occupying powers is considered as an exception). If we study these verses, without any prejudice and with an intention to know the truth, we can understand that there is no open call for killing the non-believers. In fact, Quran explicitly says: "Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error." (Chapter 2, Verse 256). It also says: "Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious." (Chapter 16, Verse: 125)
On the other hand, let's look at some of the killings that have taken place in the recent history of mankind and who were behind them. Who dropped those destructive atom bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Were they Muslims? Can anyone forget Hitler? Was he a Muslim? Who was behind the Vietnam War and the chemical weapons used to kill poor Vietnamese? Stalin who killed millions of people in Russia was not a Muslim! The killing fields in Cambodia were the creation of Paul Pot! The two destructive World Wars! How many millions of people died in these wars? Who fought these wars? The examples do not stop here but these are more than enough to know the hypocrisy of people who spread false information.
Recently, Geert Wilders, a member of the Dutch parliament, has written a letter in the daily, De Volkskrant, that calls for a ban on Quran. I am deeply saddened, not because of the ferocity of the comments made by Mr. Wilders, but at the horrific ignorance expressed by an MP in that modern and civilized nation about one of the greatest scripts ever in the history of mankind that has touched millions of lives. I am sure he has unleashed his fury against the divine book without taking a bit of his time to go through the same, at least once. Had he done that, I am sure, he would have a different opinion.
He says “Quran calls on people to kill non-believers and rape woman”. The first statement (to kill non-believers) is a gross misinformation while the second (to rape women) a blatant lie. I invite him to read this verse from the holy book: "If anyone slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people." (Holy Quran, Chapter: 5, Verse : 32)
Quran starts its every chapter with this verse: “In the name of God, Most Merciful, Most Gracious….” Mercy, modesty, tolerance and forgiveness are some of the inherent qualities Quran teaches. The Arabic word for mercy is repeated more than 300 times in this script which calls its followers to show patience at the time of hardships, even when they are attacked by others. Likewise, the Arabic word for patience is repeated over 100 times. It says: "Nor can Goodness and Evil be equal. Being content with what you’ve got is key to happiness

PROPHET Muhammad, peace be upon him, once said: "Riches are not from an abundance of worldly goods, but from a content mind." On another occasion, he said: "Look to those inferior to yourselves, so that you may not hold God’s benefits in contempt."
An ordinary man is always of the nature that he cannot be satisfied with what is available to him at the moment. He always craves for more and more. The Prophet describes this state of mind of the common man thus: "If the son of Adam has a valley full of gold, he will crave for a second one. If he has two, he will crave for a third one. Nothing will satisfy him, except the earth."
One of the main sources of displeasure and absence of peace of mind in our times is our insatiable desire for more and more worldly resources. Each one of us goes through such a phase in one way or the other as we struggle to attain a state of total mental satisfaction by accumulating everything valuable in life.
The life, it is commonly believed, is a race for this mental state and a major share of our time and efforts is being spent in the pursuit of worldly pleasures. Even this state varies from person to person as many believe being rich is everything, while some others are under the impression that being famous will make them happy. There is yet another group of people who consider being in a powerful position will win them a totally satisfied mind.
However, is being rich and famous means everything in life? Does power and money win mental satisfaction? When we ponder over these issues deeply, and analyse real-life examples from our day-to-day life, it will become clear to us that happiness and peace of mind are something any of these cannot buy. So, what is that some thing, which if we practise every day, or rather every moment, that leads our hearts and minds to a state of total satisfaction?
The Prophet’s invaluable advice is thus for every one. Be happy with what you have at the moment. Learn to cherish what you enjoy at the moment rather than running after things which you do not have and cannot have in the nearest future, even if you try your best. Does this mean that you stop trying to improve your present state of affairs? No. The first step to attain complete mental pleasure is to learn to enjoy what is with you at the moment.
For instance, if we are in good health, we should look at the people around us who may be immensely rich, but are suffering from grave and life-threatening diseases and thank God. If we have a small house, let’s look at the people who do not have a place of their own to rest after a hard day’s work. We have a nice, loving family. But there are hundreds of people around us who crave for love and care from someone. We are employed. There are millions of unemployed people around the world. Thus, if we start looking at ourselves first and God’s blessings to us, soon we will appreciate each and every little thing that is given to us. That’s what Allah says in Holy Quran:
"If you would count up the favours of Allah, never would you be able to number them... (Chapter 16, Verse 18)"
So, if we learn to cherish what we have at the moment, we will obviously learn to thank God for whatever He has given to us in life. This will make us eligible for more benevolence from His side. Allah says in the Holy Quran:
"If ye are grateful, I will add more (favours) unto you" (Chapter 14, Verse 7)
This is the best way to make ourselves and those around us happy and satisfied.
